PattyG's Journal, 31 May 2009

I went for my first trail run with two of my friends today. I made it about 12.7-K. Not the 15K I was hoping for, but I discovered that for the 15-K I am doing next week, I must carry water with me. The temperatures reached the 90s for the first time this summer. Running through the woods made it feel a great deal cooler, but the humidity was extremely high. I did more walking than I wanted to, but I found that I pushed myself too much at the beginning. I know to back off a bit at the beginning, and alternate more walking with the running earlier on so that I can make it for the full 15K. This was a wonderful learning opportunity, and I am glad I had the chance to experience this before next Sunday. Now I rest up and take it easy with my workouts during the next week to build back up my strength and endurance.

Fantastic run! And so great that you learned from this one so the next one will be easier. I'm in awe. I'm trying my first 5k next weekend. I'll be walking and running.

That's where I started as well. I had signed up to do the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta two years ago. It had always been one of my goals, but I had never done any running before. So, as soon as I took the plunge and turned in my application in March, I started walking/jogging several times a week and discovered I really enjoyed it. I did my first 5-K in May, and then I did my first 10-K (the Peachtree) on the fourth of July. I walked/jogged both of them, but my goal was to finish, not win. I compete with myself in these races. What the others around me are doing comes second. Good luck on your race! We can compare results next week.
