Is anyone else using a BMI CALCULATOR for their "goal" weight? I used an online BMI calculator and the goal weight I set for myself is too high! I need to be about 10-15 lbs less than that to fall within the middle of the normal range.

How did you come up with your goal weight?

You should go by height, age, body type, etc. It's where you feel comfortable and can maintain your weight. Your goal weight needs to be sustainable. You can also decide as you lose weight and see how you feel and look.

The doctor's charts tend to be pretty good for most people, but I never seemed to fit them right. You can buy an electronic body fat percentage detector for about $30 online. There are "ideal" percentages for men and women that really have nothing to do with body type (big-boned, etc), so based on that (and with some simple math), it's pretty easy to figure out the perfect goal weight for you. And if you pick one up, the added advantage is you can monitor your progress and see if you are losing fat (the whole point!), water (ok... good to lose some sometimes), or muscle (bad, bad, bad... don't lose muscle). I did that and mine says I would be at an ideal 16% body fat (for men) at 163. Seems kind of low for me, but who knows? It might be perfect. I know I need to at least get to 180. Then I figure I'll decide what to do from there.

Thanks for everyones comments. This is the BMI calculator: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.html I will look for that body fat detector-great idea! Hope it fits in my purse lol! My doctor has no idea I am doing this. I will be curious to see if my weight loss shows up in good cholesterol readings at my physical next month. MY goal weight was chosen as I thought it was attainable. I will adjust when I reach it!!

My doctors have always given me a range of "healthy weight" and my goal weight is the weight within range that I remember best liking the fit of my favorite clothing.
