It is amazing that the Sequoias live so long. In the scope of things, their roots are very shallow, only 6-8 feet deep but 25 ft across.. You can go to YouTube and search —fallen sequoia tree and find a video of this tree actually falling. It fell in October when the crowds were gone. A 14 year old German boy caught it on his iPhone. I had just been there 3 weeks prior with my brother and his wife (totally into trees). She shot dozens of beautiful pictures of this tree standing. They debated what to do with the tree after the fact since it totally blocked several trails. They ended up rebuilding the trails and are building a walkway above and along side of it so people can get a sense of just how huge and magnificent it truly is. This tree was located right on the edge of a creek bed and each time I have walked past it over the last 20 years I have always thought that one of these years when we have a wet, high snow year that this baby would go down— and, it finally did. I was heart broken. The impact actually registered on the Richter earthquake scale .

There are hundreds of trees up there the same approx as this one. Just to think that many of these trees were already in existence when Jesus was born. This area wasn’t a vacation destination. A group of us bought a town up there in 1990. A 1920s logging town on 750 acres close to the Kern River with class 5 rapids in a good snow year. My friends and I went up for 4-6 days every 8-12 weeks. Sometimes it would be just me and sometimes there would be 10 of us just depending on who was working. We had a great 20 years doing this.
