Shrinking Sonya's Journal, 28 October 2010

I have been discovering all too well how personal a diet/lifestyle change is. I found out today that my boss has been on a diet for several weeks (probably close to 2 months) and none of us really noticed. She has been doing Herbalife shakes to replace breakfast and lunch, and then eats "whatever" she wants for dinner. About 2 months of doing this, and she's only lost 10 lbs (she has quite a bit to lose). She can't have snacks either! To me, this is just denying yourself the opportunity to learn what a real-life healthy lifestyle is. I finally asked her about it today, and she almost seemed ashamed to tell me about it because she knows I've lost a lot of weight (she watched me transform last year when I lost 50 lbs til I found out I was pregnant). Denying yourself normal food for 2/3 of your day seems like setting yourself up for failure. What happens when you come off of the shakes? And how is this considered healthy when she says you can eat whatever you want for dinner, no matter how fattening it is?

If you're on this diet, I am not saying it's bad! I just don't understand how it works lol. And most of all, I don't understand why you'd want to skip 2 meals and a full day's worth of snacks and replace them with shakes (that she says don't taste very good), just to lose 10 lbs in two months!

Anyway, this just reiterates the fact that calorie counting is the only way my life is going to change. I need to know exactly what I consume so I know what to expend in exercise. Seems simple enough to me! Plus, small meals and snacks seem very satisfying to me throughout the day.

**Toast** Here's to knowing what works best for your body and feeling comfortable with your lifestyle choices, knowing you can continue it forever!

Nice journal! I too believe your boss is setting herself up for failure. I have always been a yo yo dieter and typically did what she is doing. Yes the weight comes off because you are not eating. However, as soon as you are at your weight goal you begin to eat regular food and not watch as much. Sooner or later the pounds creep back on. Good for you in knowing what works for you and your success. I pray we all can stay on track and know for most of us here it is a lifestyle change, not just loosing weight. Cheers!

You are awesome! Your story is awesome and an inspiration to all of us. I am the opposite of an over-eater. I'm a non-eater. I starve my body thusly it doesn't trust me to give it what it needs. Instead, it hoards every single thing that I eat - it goes into survival mode. I don't do Herbal Life shakes but I do SlimFast and/or Carnation Instant Breakfast and/or Ensure. I KNOW my body needs nutrition but I don't like food. I've tried to eat but it honestly makes me sick to my stomach to eat before 3 pm. Shakes are a way for me to get the nutrition that my body desperately needs, while training my stomach to have something in it AND gives me some sort of routine so that my body comes out of survival mode. I'm currently consuming 1100 calories a day, I still need to force 800 additional calories to get to what my body needs. For someone that doesn't get hungry very often, that is really hard! I haven't been at it long enough to see if it will cause weightloss but I'm giving it a real go!

Thanks for your feedback, guys. tinast- yeah, I think yo-yo dieting is a never ending trend for most Americans. The problem is, we have a very conflicting culture: the magazine models and movie stars make us feel like we need to change our bodies, but the fast food chains and quick-fix lifestyle is rampant. We see beautiful, healthy bodies and we think "wow, I would love to change and be like that someday", but then we glance at the TV and see that the McRib is back! It's confusing and causes emotional distress. ASemones- I used to have the same problem! When I first started trying to get healthy and lose weight, I was pretty much starving myself. I'd eat 1000 calories or less and feel like I still must've eaten too much because I wasn't losing weight at a very good rate. Then my brother (who was also trying to lose weight) FORCED me to eat 1800 calories/day for a week and continue doing the same activities I was doing before, just to see how it affected my weight loss. Guess what? I lost twice the amount that week than I'd been losing eating much less. Your body needs energy (calories) to be able to burn fat. If you're exercising or just trying to be active and healthier, you're just stalling yourself if you're not providing adequate fuel to your body! It's hard to correct though, I know. Especially if eating makes you feel sick (have you asked the doctor what would cause that?)

I have ask my doctor what could cause my lack of hungry. He has not found any medical reason for it but theorizes that I recognized food as being my enemy years ago and disowned it. I may agree. I don't have the typical cultprets to deal with: tv, anything crunchy, candy or soda. My weight is solely attributed to lack of food and exercise. My body just keeps storing and storing. I have am working on the food thing. Unfortunately, there isn't a quick fix to my non-hunger problem. Instead, I have goals to reach certain calories. I am going to add 100 per week until I get to 1800 per day. I have lost my initial 5 lbs in a little over a week but I haven't been at it long enough to be tooting any horns. I posted originally to respond to the shake deal. I don't know how your boss is using them but I am using it to suppliment when I can't bare the sight of food. Please, call me April! :)
