Vickiauntmick's Journal, 28 May 2013

A dear friend of the family passed away this morning. He was the reason I decided to make this change and get healthy. He was 3 years younger than I and had been in the hospital with complication from pneumonia for the past 2 months. His lungs failed, they had him on a transplant list, and they put him on life support- which they removed this morning after his kidneys failed. He had a wife and two young children. He worked with neglected and abused children, and his wife manages an abused woman's shelter. You couldn't find a better set of people. He was a great loss to many people.

I came home quite torn up from the news this evening. I fed my chickens and came inside and began to check my email and messages. About an hour later I went back out and a pack of dogs had tore down the chicken coup fence and killed all of my 5 chickens. I have raised these birds since they were chicks. It takes 5 months for a chick to become an egg layer and they were a month away from laying. I am absolutely beside myself. I called the police and they found the owner of the dogs. They offered to not site her for the leash law if she paid restitution of $150 for the chickens and the coup, but as for those of you that have had pets, no money can compensate for the time, feed, damage, loss, love, and future companionship of pet.

Sending hugs your way. I wish there were something I could say that would help ease the pains of this day, but I know there isn't. Knowing that your friend was a great loss to many people is a testament to the person he was. I hope that the memories and laughter you surely shared help carry you through. I'm sorry the day ended so terribly for you. ~ A

There is nothing that can be said to compensate for your loses today. Your friend and his wife sounded like amazing people. Instead you had to deal with people that don't take another person's property in to account while they allow their pet to roam free. We had a similiar situation a number of years ago. The neighbors dog kept coming over and killing our free range birds. We called police and they went and told the dog owner we were within our rights to kill their dog if they did not keep it away from our livestock. They didn't and my husband had to shoot the dog with one of our birds in it's mouth. Then called police to report what we had to do. The dog owner threatened us because we had shot their dog. Cops stepped in and took care of situation...but it was always a barrier until they moved. We were in the right to protect our animals...too bad that they did not feel the same about theirs until it was too late. Officer told us next time to shoot, shovel and shut up. It was apparent that they did not care about their animal...when we did about ours. Some beautiful creatures were needlessly killed because of idiots. (No leash laws in the country where we live...sadly) Our guard dogs are always kept in kennels unless we are outside to keep an eye on them. You are not alone...my sympathies...we have a batch of chicks right now that my hubby is doting on...and our layers are amazing. I know exactly how you are feeling.
