As I have mentored people on their weight loss journeys that is one of the strategies that I try to instill in people. On normal working, or ho-hum days that is when you eat sensibly and follow your personal weight loss plan. Then, when special events come around, you can enjoy some of the offerings without derailing your efforts— just plan to do selective ordering and make make better (not best) choices at times like Thanksgiving. Then, in subsequent days you just return to your usual WOE and maybe try to keep it just a hair on the lighter side. Punishing yourself, feeling guilty, going without meals is not required. You cam enjoy your food life if you can learn to practice portion control/moderation. It is a plan for life.
