Experiment starts manana!!!

So today while I was working out I couldn't help but keep thinking about why it was so easy for me to drop weight last Jan '09 & in '07 w/o counting calories & w/o working out. What was different? I mean, how on earth did I do it in '07 when I was drinking 5-8 regular Red Bulls 5 days a week?!?!?!? And that's what got me thinking. Back then & also in '09 I was NOT using the artificial sweetner Splenda. I might have it here or there, but not even weekly or daily as I am right now. I started using Splenda daily in March '09 (also when my weight started creeping back up). Now, I haven't wanted to believe/think about all the hype b/c it's been so nice to have a no calorie sweetner. But in all honesty, I've been thinking alot about agave & how I don't want to be using artificial things if I can help it. So today I decided I will try it out for a month. I don't see it hurting me by not ingesting it. So as of tomorrow, NO MORE SPLENDA!! This may end up making me go w/o caffeine or I'll just have to add an extra packet of hot chocolate to my coffee. But I'm doing it. I need this to be what's holding my weight where it's been at since Dec. So fingers crossed people!! = )

So I took 2 days off from working out. I shouldn't have but I did. I definitely made up for it today. I did workout # 2 of wk 2 of C25K AFTER I did all my weight lifting (3 days worth). It's wasn't too bad considering, so I'm happy about that. As for the weight lifting, oye:

Barbell Squat: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 25lbs
Stiff-Legged Deadlift: 3 sets/12 reps w 25lbs
Leg Extension: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 45lbs
Lying Leg Curl: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 45lbs
Standing Calf Raises: 3 sets/12 reps 35lbs
Exercise Ball Crunches: 3 sets/15 reps
Dips: 3 sets/12 reps (YES!! I found a way to do them!)
Bent-Arm Barbell Pullover: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 15lbs
Lateral Raises: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 10/5/5lbs
Tricep Dumbbell Kickback: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 5lbs
Hammer Curls: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 10lbs
Deadlift: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 35lbs
Barbell Full Squat: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 35lbs
Dumbbell Lunges: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 10lbs
Seated Calf Raises: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 35lbs
Dumbbell Shrugs: 3 sets/12 reps w/ 10lbs
Decline Crunches: 3 sets/15 reps
Hyperextentions: 3 sets/15 reps
*Leg Raises not done this week (but really not feeling bad about it!!)

Let me tell you me, I will NOT being doing all that again AND then jogging. I will be soaking in a scolding hot bath w/ salts & I pray I'll be able to move tomorrow. Lol, it's all good either way though. I'll shuffle around w/ a smile if I have to = )

Hope everyone had a great Friday! = )

Good luck with your experiment. I'm in the same boat too trying to figure what works so I can get maximum results.

Interesting take on the Splenda. I think it's a horrible product, myself. Not the taste, just the effects on the body. You might be on to something there. Have you tried Stevia? It's not really an artificial sweetener as it's made from the stevia plant's leaves. A little expensive, but it doesn't take much. I use a little (like 1/8th tsp) in my greek style yogurt every morning and in my coffee. Worth looking in to. I've read that agave can cause that same rise in blood sugar that sugar and sucrose cause, but I might not have the whole story on that one.

Actually I had heard that Agave is sweeter than sugar while not causing such a spike in the blood sugar, and that's why it's become popular as we as it being natural? It wouldn't make sense for people to pick it over sugar otherwise really...

Thnx = ) I've tried Stevia & I absolutely didn't like the taste. Gave me a headache too. Agave can & will cause the same rise in blood sugar, but you don't have to use much of it at all. I was looking up equivalents if using in place of sugar & the common one I found was 1/4 cup agave to 1 cup sugar. So I guess it's pretty potent. I wouldn't have to use much then & it'd really only be in my coffee & tea. I don't use Splenda on anything else. The only other thing I'd need to replace is SF Red Bull & go back to regular Red Bull. I know I should just cut RB out completely, but I'm not ready for that step yet, esp when school starts back up again. I'm just hoping this really makes a difference. It's the 1 major difference in the last 5 yrs of when I was losing & when I wasn't.

Oh, well thanks for clearing that up for us! lol And good luck with the change! Another thing to possibly consider is that there have been some studies showing that High Fructose Corn Syrup consumption might cause weight gain too...and unfortunately it's in a lot of processed foods and such. I've started trying to pick alternatives where they don't contain any, and it of course gives me one more reason to not grab that donut or whatever sometimes!

Lol. Yeah, I've been about 90% HFCS-free for a few years now. Definitely not worth eating. The agave is really intriguing & Jillian Michaels has a recipe for fudge brownies using dark cocoa powder, applesauce instead of butter & honey instead of sugar. The idea of using things like honey & agave instead of sugar seem pretty cool to me b/c they are much sweeter so you can use less of it. I don't have a massive sweet tooth but I do like sweet things & I do get cravings = )

Well that is interesting.. I have not read anything about splenda.. I will keep my eyes open and link anything I see regarding it. That is if you are interested. I have no idea if I have alot of if or not. I dont know what my drink mix is sweetened with. I dont drink pop and only when we go out to eat do I have iced tea with a fake packet.. but that is like once a month and sometimes even then I get water. I wonder what is in my skinny cows.. or my fudgepops? I always dump them in the freezer then pitch the box to save space, so I have no idea. Anyway it gives me something to think about.

@Ceebee - Splenda is the brand name, the generic name is sucralose but they are the same thing. As for Skinny Cow products, shows they contain (in order of most occurances):high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, sugar, sorbital, maltitol, & invert sugar (haven't heard of this one yet). In the "No Sugar Added" there's maltitol & sorbital on top of the Splenda. The trend I happened to notice about those bars is that sorbital is used more often when vanilla was the base ice cream. Sucralose has been the only artifical sweetner I've been able to eat & have no problems digesting. All other wreck havoc on my body (as well as many others). That's probably why it only ever took 1 Skinny Cow product to make me sick. As for the whole Splenda thing, there's been controversy since the beginning. I even had a chem lecture in college about Splenda & how it's NOT made from real sugar but b/c of it's chemical structure marketing is allowed to get away w/ saying that it is (the chem prof may have been a tad bit bitter or just annoyed since his brother was a marketing exec for Splenda). So I had alot of info before I ever started using it. It's been a nearly daily but most assuredly weekly item I ingest for over a year now & I really think it's time to back away. I know I have to be careful of sugar as in it's various forms, will sometimes shoot my blood sugar through the roof w/ just one bite. But I've also gotten much better at not over sweetening things as much so I think it's time to go back to the real deal & perhaps incorporate agave in the mix. = )
