FullaBella's Journal, 22 July 2019

That’s it. I’m officially a witch. Not the kind with special spells and a chic pointy hat. More like the kind that swaps the letter W for a B because of having unkind thoughts.

I’ve been a member of InstaCart for home grocery delivery for over a year but my usage has dropped off the past six months as I began doing my own shopping more. It’s not that they aren’t good at it. I’m just taking a more active approach toward my food acquisition.

However, the monthly bill for membership continued and I thought this morning, “I either need to use it or drop it. I don’t care if it’s only $15 a month; that’s still a waste.” As I’ve already paid for this month I decided to order a few actual groceries (cottage cheese, rice vinegar, cucumbers) in addition to seven cases of water. Yeah, seven. I keep a lot of bottled water to hand out to customers and delivery people. It was time to restock.

Yes, I could have gone to the store and done it myself. Yes, it would be a good lifting exercise. But, I’ve already paid for delivery service.

Normally the delivery person is perky and younger than me. Today, that was not the case. My delivery person was a poor older lady huffing and puffing and telling me how this will probably be her last delivery for a while because she’s been needing surgery on her elbow and this delivery made it worse.

Seriously? Then ‘don’t’ be a delivery person. It can’t all be butter and cheese. Oh, Crap. I forgot to order eggs. Dang.

So I helped her unload and then tipped her (on top of the tip the Instacart charges at the time of order) but I’m aggravated and not just over my forgetting eggs. I’m aggravated for feeling guilty over a person who chose the job of delivery and then complains about it.

It reminded me of the past when I went to a masseuse who sighed in pain during my massage. He complained he had arthritis and by the end of the day (the only time I could take an appointment) his hands were in pain.

Okay, then, how about ‘don’t take a 5pm appointment?’ I’m paying you to rub on me and make me feel better. Not whine and fill me with guilt!

It’s Texas. Guess what happens in Texas in Summer? The weather gets hot. And it’s not a dry heat. It’s a hair soaking, face dripping, sweat shield soaking, miserable heat.

And, surprise, surprise, it happens every year. So if you have a job that requires you to be outside and you find the hot weather uncomfortable during a Texas Summer then you need to find another job for next year. It isn’t changing.

There’s more but I gotta go. It’s time for my broom fitting.

I love instacart. And I agree, if you're complaining about delivering for them, why are you? Uber didn't want you?

I also use Instacart and I buy a lot of water because ours is not so good. I also buy it for my husbands business. Anyway last guy said he was from Taiwan and I sure bought a lot of plastic water. Said I was keeping them working. I said I dont have good water that we have a well and not city water. He said do you put the bucket down or just drink plastic water. I said Excuse me the well brings water from under ground and pipes bring it to the house. That the water smells bad. I said I welcome you to the United States but I have said enough about my drinking habits !!

"Put the bucket down"?! LOL! When I was young, being a city girl, I had no idea that there were whole communities in the United States (some nearby!) that still got water from wells. I would have had no idea how they got it in the house; maybe filling buckets at the hand pump, like in "Little House on the Prairie"? Oh, I'd led a very sheltered life! When my English pen pal wrote, in the late 1960s, that her parents had installed central heating in the home they owned (a "council house" built after WWII), I answered, "Everyone *here* has central heating!" What a naive little girl I was! At 19, I moved into a 150-year-old wooden-frame house in an older neighborhood in which the only source of heat was a gas space heater in the living room. My bedroom and bathroom, during a Buffalo winter, were unbearably cold. I can understand people who have a limited exposure to some of life's "inconveniences"!

I often feel sorry for the older ladies who serve me as cashiers in supermarkets. They have to stand on an unforgiving concrete floor for hours, handling merchandise that's often dusty or dripping, hard-edged, frozen-cold, or heavy. It's brutal on the hands, especially during the winter when the air is dry. (It was a difficult job for me, sometimes, when I was just a teenager.) I can't help but think that these ladies would not be doing such work if they didn't need to, or had the skills to do something less physically demanding. Maybe it's the same way for that older InstaCart delivery lady.

I agree, no body is forced to have a job they hate.

I’m right there with you @Miraculum. “There but for the grace of God, go I.” Something my grandmother would say and sticks with me. I don’t know what my future holds, but I won’t rule out that life won’t try to screw me till the very end, so if I’m delivering Instacart orders in my golden years to make ends meet, I hope people will have some compassion for me when I have to lift and haul 7 cases of water. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@sweetgeorgiapeaches......actually....yeah, they are!

That's why I labeled myself a (B)Witch. I felt bad for her. I truly did. It made me feel guilty. And that's what frustrated me. Feeling guilty for utilizing a service for which I was paying. I don't know how it works. Do they know the order before they accept it?? I'll probably work right up through lunch on the day I die. Again I felt bad for her but where's the line in paying for a service and getting guilt tripped?

I know Bella, you’re not a (B)Witch, you’re a kind person, but this just caught me off guard. I understand what you’re saying.

Thank you. As my journal reads I helped her unload it and still tipped her. I'm fully aware those days aren't that far away for me. Now here's the thing I left out of my journal. She already had a wagon with her. I've had water delivered in the past and helped those people too as we hauled it one case at a time from the car. All in all I think I was overly Grumpy yesterday.

You're not a what you said, a what you said wouldn't have felt bad for her, would have insulted the lady and let her know how beneath you she is, and not felt a bit bad about it. You even feel bad for feeling bad about it. You are not good at being a b-witch.

You shouldn't feel guilt Bella. You helped her unload. That should have been her second tip.
23 Jul 19 by member: jessabridge4444
Thanks Phil. Jess all in all she got four tips of you count the help. Instacart automatically charges tips of 5%, I always tip extra cash on delivery plus they get another % if I rate 5 stars.

Damn...now you know why she extra complained. She has a scam going on
23 Jul 19 by member: jessabridge4444
I should have followed up my last post in this thread to say that, of course, I don't think Bella was being a bwitch! And, yes, Sweet Georgia Peaches, some people *are* "forced" to take jobs that are a burden for them. Sometimes, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do...

I understand the thoughts and your feelings. I'm more interested in the fitting. Do you have options for the broom handle? Can it be fitted with a horn like a saddle? Is there a top speed? Does it come in chrome or matte finish?
23 Jul 19 by member: Terrapin12
And I do wonder if Instacart provides deets for the delivery person prior to accepting a drop off?
23 Jul 19 by member: Terrapin12
I also had questions about the broom.
23 Jul 19 by member: liv001
Okay, I can see this may become an issue. Are we taking natural straw or fabricated? Does it produce a gas as it 'zooms' about? Will we have a carbon footprint issue?
23 Jul 19 by member: Terrapin12
I know several witches of the potion, brew, and broom (bell, book and candle, hoo-rah!) variety, I can make some inquiries if you like.
