liv001 Just a question ..... why are you trying to eat more gelatin? The amino acids in gelatin are not the ones involved in protein synthesis. Gelatin is broken down in the GI tract to its component parts and has almost no nutritional value.

Gsn Fan This is just the regular size box. It takes one cup of hot water then one cup of cold water.

Gail531 gelatin has some benefits. If you google search gelatin, it tells you that it aids in collagen, weight reduction, digestive and GI track. Joint issues which is why I am eating it. Also not to mention it is quite tasty.

Google contains many opinions, many of which are just that .... opinions with no scientific or nutritional basis. Gelatin is derived from hair, skin, cartilage and hooves of animals.

Kinda like a bone broth then. Which also congels.

Gail yeah bone health. I need it. I run so I am finding everything I can to strengthen. I use collagen powder and really thing it works on things like skin, nails and hair so I feel that gelatin potentially can help as well. Nutritional parts of the animal that modern industrial eating tends to leave out.

I think I'd like the flavor but the artificial sweeteners are a turn off for me. But I know it would taste good. 😁

You can make it how you want Sallkr. I use a lot of plain gelatin and add stuff I like (or think I will like)

liv001, I have boxes of plain Knox gelatin. Can you give me an idea of "what" and "how much of what" you add to plain gelatin?

I just started this adventure with gelatin but I dissolve a bit in cold liquid and then add to shakes when I have them or my rhubarb concoctions. I make normal jello and hard (gummy bear like jello) using sugar free drops. I do not do well with apartame which is in normal jello but I am OK with splenda. One envelope of gelatin makes two cups of normal jello. I add apple cider vinegar as well The Paleo community is into using gelatin so I have looked at many receipes on those sites (like Paleo Grub)

I always heard gelatin makes your fingernails stronger.

Fritzy 22. Knox had to stop advertising that because it isn’t true. Gelatin and collagen are completely broken down in the GI tract. They don’t survive intact and don’t replace collagen/cartilage lost in joints, skin, etc. Normal aging reduces manufacture of these substances as the body wears out .... it’s what the body is programmed to do. If these reductions didn’t occur, we wouldn’t get wrinkles and creaky joints. Eating protein of any kind doesn’t improve muscle mass, cartilage or collagen in the skin if the body doesn’t want it done. Not what anyone wants to hear but true. Check with your physician.

Gail - check with my physician about what? I was just responding to questions about why to eat gelatin. I'd heard that it helped make nails stronger years ago, that was the only reason I could think of. I rarely eat it myself.

Gail are you vegan? I am sure you can find something equivalent in your way of eating. Here is a study you can look at on bone and collagen if you want to: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5793325/

Fritzy 22. Check with your physician about natural aging and more about how the body functions. I appreciate that you were only inquiring about how to use gelatin. For myself, I ask about “why” before I get to “how.” Hair and nails are made of keratin, not gelatin or collagen.
