Today was another medical event day— this time at my gym where I swim. As I was lapping at the wall in the deep end I saw the lifeguard talking to some boys who had been getting a little rowdy. As I approach the shallow end I saw this little boy who had been swimming alone, his dad playing with his cell phone and not watching the kid. The kid is about 4 and a pretty decent little swimmer. So lifeguard is not close by and dad is not paying attention and the kid jumped off the side of the pool and I thought I saw his head graze the edge. He didn’t come right back up — he had sunk to the bottom. I went under and pulled him up and thank goodness he started sputtering right away and crying. There was no open wound, just a reddened spot where he must have just grazed the edge. Dad refused the medics— we suggested that he still take him in to get checked and he just said maybe he would and left with the kid— who seemed to be ok at the moment. I told him what to do overnight but still urged him to have the kid evaluated. you can’t make them do it. Lesson—- put your cell phone away and pay attention to your kids. No child that young should be in a pool alone.
