Sharons Victory's Journal, 24 May 2019

I drank again last night...unplanned but my sister wanted to hit up a bar after farmers market.

I decided to try beer because my problem with alcohol was I'd get SUPER drunk and get in to trouble and my hangovers caused me to want to eat bad food or I'd eat bad food when I was super drunk.

I always avoided beer because of the carbs and calories but if I got wasted I'd be eating those terrible foods anyway so I started wondering if it was better if I just had the beer and it would be less carbs in the grand scheme of things because I wouldn't be getting wasted and wouldn't have a hangover.

Well...I ended up having 5 beers last night (it was so many because it was from 7pm-12am) , VERY high calories/carbs but I did not get super drunk AND I don't have a hangover this morning! AND I had fun...

I don't know if I'll be able to do that type of thing often because of the calories but I'm happy that maybe I could have found a way to enjoy myself and hit the town without getting out of hand.

We shall see. I still think I shouldn't do it a lot at all.

I make sure to enter my calories from the beer to keep myself in check. I drink craft beers which usually are 200 to 300 calories a bottle. Adds up quick! Everything in moderation, right?

My vote for what it’s worth, this is heading no where good. 😞 Please reconsider. Imo alcohol has never benefitted anyone. Proceed with caution Sharon. Honestly, I say this not to judge but with love and concern ❤️❤️

definitely don't do it often, but I wouldn't worry about occasionally -- especially if you had fun.

Anything that I try new, and enjoy, and it’s fun, automatically I tend to do it more often. This is why I say caution Sharon, you are looking for fun, for good times and if you find it in any kind of alcohol, anywhere and with anyone, I’d almost guarantee there will be a future post of utter regret and despair. All the best in your future decisions. I know I could get pounced on for saying this and to refrain but I’ve never met anyone in my entire life where alcohol was a positive or beneficial at the end.

Please be careful :)

I also agree with wifey9707...in the end alcohol will likely cause poor impulse control and sabotage your beautiful self and hard earned weight loss. If you cannot moderate it to one drink, it could be a larger problem. Love you and I mean this in a caring way.

Not that they're good or I condone drinking, but mgd 64, bud 55, Miller Lite, & ultra are great low calorie low carb choices. Ultra is my go to..

If it's the company and fun you are after, you could alternate a beer with a sparkling water. That cuts the carbs and alcohol in half and reminds yourself to moderate.

Sounds wonderful. Great to hear you had a good time. Interesting to hear how beer worked out for you by the way. Know at maintenance, I will allow more of those 'rare occasions'

I also drink the same amount of water as beer 😁

I'm with wifey9707 and HCB on this, for all the same reasons. The history of getting "super drunk" (Sharon's phrase) and hung over indicates a weakness for alcohol that can quickly take hold of *you*, instead of you controlling *it*. (They don't call it "Demon Rum" for nothing!) In my single days, when Disco was the craze, I got sick drinking on an empty stomach just once. One night of bed spins and hugging the porcelain throne, and the hangover the following day: That was enough to teach me that drinking was not a hobby I could embrace. I limited myself to two glasses of wine, which I nursed over several hours, and I was home in bed by midnight. (If only chocolate had made me that sick!)

The issue of calories in beer: If you choose to consume it, it's best to alternate with non-alcoholic beverages and, if possible, limit your time in the "party" atmosphere. You don't have to give up having fun. However, if the party/bar atmosphere and/or the company combines to lower your resistance, it might also be good to put a time limit on your exposure. You'll feel virtuous once you're cozy in your own home!

Drinking a sparkling water or just water in between EACH drink has helped me in the past. Haven’t been drinking alcohol enough to have several glasses in one sitting these past years but back in the day the water helped with not getting too drunk AND with how I felt in the morning. (And now it would be fewer calories!!! Which I wasn’t concerned with at the time. ) I also used to take vitamins when I got home or before I left, not sure if this holds true scientifically but in my personal experience when I did those together I never got a hangover. Then again my liver was also 10 yrs younger .
