I love doing Volksmarchs. This is a carry-over from Germany, but essentially it's a 10k (about 6.5mile) walk done for health and fun. While you can record your progress and get patches at certain milestones (both distance and events), it's not necessary. I personally find the idea of the patches very motivating, though, so I make sure to get credit for the walks which costs $3 a walk per person.

So, I had a talk with my son (he's 3) and we're doing "practice" walks around our neighborhood until we're both capable of doing the 10k without killing ourselves. I know that if I were to set out to do a Volksmarch today, I could complete it (just barely), but I know I couldn't finish if I have to carry him part of the way. And since it's much more fun with a friend, I'm recruiting my ever entergetic son. :)

Any way to get more physical activity and make it fun is great! Good luck with your training!

I miss the "busyness" of the Volksmarches in Germany (we were there during my father's Army tour of duty and that's where we ran into the concept). While they're still fun in the U.S., it's just not quite the same.
