Today I made it through 12 hours without processed sugar! The first time in a long time. I came to realize over the weekend that I have a food addiction. I will attend my first Overeaters Anonymous meeting this Wednesday evening where I live. I'm scared, yes, but overjoyed that I can begin to recover from years of unhealthy eating. I am a compulsive eater: I buy a "factory size" bag of Hershey´s assortment from Sam's and eat half the bag in the car on my way home. I used to buy a cake from Sam's club and keep it in the fridge, eating at it little by little. I used to buy 2 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and eat half while watching television. I would justify all this by exercising 4x a week, running at least a 5k. With any type of addiction, you can look at someone and never know they are an addict. I am 55, 6´0", 180 lbs., I run 4x a week, great shape (for my age!), no one would guess I have a food addiction. This goes much deeper than what is on the outside. This week I can begin my recovery as a food addict.

I have to respond to your journal entry. I had done a search for food addiction and this was the first entry that showed up. I too am addicted to food. I to have those same behaviors you described. I beat myself up over and over again after a binge like that. I tell people I have an addiction and they look at me like I have 10 heads. Thank you for helping me realize Im not alone. Best of luck to you. I'm curious to hear how your OA meeting went. I'm currently looking for one in my area.

Thank you. I have gone now to two OA meetings. It is good to hear that we are not alone. Do try to attend one in your area. Lately I have been up and down regarding my food addiction. Today is good, no sugar and no overeating. But as is true in 12-step programs, ODAT: One Day At a Time. Or in my (and perhaps yours), one moment at a time. Do stay in touch.
