mflores08's Journal, 29 May 2010

From the time I started regular food I was having heartburn and eating tums like they were tic-tacs. On Sunday 5/23/10 I couldn't bear the discomfort and called the covering doctor at the hospital of University of Pennsylvania. I was admitted for further testing. I had an upper GI series with small bowel follow through. I tolerated the test well but was diagnosed with severe gastric reflux, and a small narrowing of the distal esophogus near the sphyincter to the stomach. This is caused by the acid backwashing up after swallowing. The doctors doubled my proton pump inhibitors, I was on a short course of pain meds, and maalox and tums. As of today, it seems to be getting better, no maalox and no tums. I have full confidence and trust in my physicians at HUP. They are taking great care of me. No regrets to the surgery and the reflux is just a small side effect that can be medically managed.

While I can't see a physical differnce in my appearence, others can. What I do notice is that I have more energy, I'm able to walk further, faster, and for a longer duration than pre-surgery.
