Heather Oltean's Journal, 15 February 2008

good morning everyone!

After Thanksgiving I weighed in at a Whopping (4 me) 187lbs and then stopped eating breads, pastas, rice, potatoes, ect...and am now varying between 170-175lbs...but, for the last week and a half I have been cheeting myself- such as letting everyone around me believe I am dieting and when I'm left alone- I sneek- maybe its hormones HAHAHA!

ok. seriously, I have been going off of memory and online cause I lost my Atkins book, but now I need to nip this in MY butt and go get the book and actually do the induction phase and get this fat off my body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been eating fruits and veggies (lower carb ones) because I am still nursing my youngest daughter and don't want her to lose all the nutrients. I guess I'll give her more of those in her solids and vitamins...

I used to do the sneaking thing because my ex was very controlling. I realized it was self-defeating. The only person I was hurting was myself. Just wanted you to know you are not alone. I think you will feel a lot stronger and more motivated once you get another copy of the book and re-start induction. Don't expect to lose as much as some people do because you have been avoiding carbs for the most part. However, you shouldn't have as dramatic of carb withdrawls. You can do this!

You may want to wait to start Induction until you finish nursing. I believe in the book that Dr Atkins recommends that pregnant women & nursing mothers not do Induction. I might be wrong on this so you will want to double check in the book.

I agree... check with your pediatrician's and docs before getting really serious about omitting foods while nursing. You don't want to deprive baby of needed nutrients. With some guidance from a doc, you may be able to do a modified diet or a something a bit different until you are through nursing. :) Great job realizing that it's time to get back at it! You can still attack the weight loss, just a bit less aggressively until it's just for "you". ;) GOOD LUCK!!

They have a good point, until you are done nursing, you might really take seriously avoiding white flour and processed grains for now. Keep to the low-carb fruit like you have in small amounts and stick to one serving of whole grains per meal s/a 1/2 cup brown rice or 1/2 cup whole grain bread. Fill up on the vegetables and get enough protein. That is basically what we eat on the maintenance phase and that phase of Atkins is OK for pregnant and nursing mothers. That is the plan that I intend to follow when I get pregnant and through nursing as well. :)

Looks like you got some GREAT thoughts from a few others. I would be willing to wager that just about everyone has "cheated" some. The fact that you are dealing with it is BIG !!! Atta girl! Like tonight I was at a concert at my church. There were 25 people with the out of town singer. I had been asked a couple months ago (before SBD) if I would share the duty of the food for the guests. They always knew that I would come up with some real good food! So I did my thing & I DID NOT cheat. But it was very difficult. All the helper's left the kitchen one time & there I am with 3 dozen beautiful, fresh croissants! Home made chicken salad with mayo, craisins, sugared pecans, etc. also a big pot of white chili made with 1/2 X 1/2 (yummy) & about 8 dozen fresh oatmeal choc chip cookies! It was so-o-o hard. But here I am just got home & I brought the salad home & added some lean turkey meat & voila --- dinner! 1 & 1/2 months ago I wouldn't have eaten in front of anyone but everytime they left the room--- snack, snack, snack!!! Anyway, most of us relate & love you more for sharing & we want to be here for you!!! Good luck finding the right structure for you & that special bundle of joy!!

Well, I'm not an atkins fan, but from a Weight Watchers (and a nursing mom's) point of view, I say ENJOY YOUR CARBS! It's the processed white flour that's not so good for you...whole grains are wonderful! When you're nursing (and in my opinion, ANYTIME), cutting out a whole food group from your diet is just plain unhealthy. Remember that it's all about moderation, and as long as you're watching your portions, and balancing between those lean proteins, WHOLE grains, and fresh fruits and veggies, I'm sure the weight will keep coming off!

Do what YOU need to do to lose weight for now. I for one probably have a wheat sensitivity problem. Fruits are out for me until I reach my goal weight, which I'm near. It's all up to the individual. I think Weight Watchers is great for some people, but I for one am on a drug that causes weight gain and getting rid of the whole food group of sugar was wonderful for me (if one can call it a food group). People not on Atkins can't understand limiting carbs is for the best for us as diets like Weight Watchers and other low calorie, high carb diets just don't work for us and that's why we're here!!! :)

P.S. Since you're nursing try a Multivitamin daily to be certain you're getting enough nutrients for you and your baby... just a thought that might help! :)
