GlennM's Journal, 09 June 2010

Doing well. As of yesterday I started to keep track of my calorie intake so I think long-term that will help me keep my weight down. If I stay below 1800 calories a day and also eventually also limit carbs the way I'm supposed to be doing I will get back to the 190s and maintain. My leg is better - the tendon is sore but I am able to walk on it OK so it has healed quite rapidly fortunately. Today I have an appointment and then plan to go to a cafe to write and maybe study Spanish, I hope to have enough money this fall to take a Spanish class at a nearby university in the evening in the Continuing Education section of the college and I will have to pay for it myself. If not I will hopefully have the money by the January semester. My friend Debbie's mother bought her a $600 red toy poodle puppy two days ago. It is one size up from a teacup poodle and she named her Ginger. She is cinammon colored, like an Irish Setter, but quite small and she won't get too big. P.S. I need a new computer - no doubt about it at this point, then I can send my writing work out. Just saw a psychiatrist of mine from over a decade ago on TV on the New England Cable News Channel, he and his wife are in trouble for letting their underage daughter have an alcohol party at their NH house, he works at Harvard last I heard. I remember seeing him with his wife jogging around town with his kids in strollers, how time flies...
Calorie intake for Tuesday June 8, 2010: 1850.
Vocabulary word of the day: volte-face -noun- 1. an act of turning around so as to face in the opposite direction. 2. an abrupt and complete reversal of attitude, opinion or position. -------Origin from the 18th Century from French, Italian and Latin.

It is sunny in Maine but clouding up here in western Massachusetts already and we are supposed to get rain by mid afternoon. Toto is well. She needs a bath! This weekend for sure once my leg is 100%. She is a riot sometimes - jumping around on the bed. She is quite smart and answers "yes" by shaking herself and jingling her collar like she's wet. If I'm cooking something that smells good she'll shake and jingle her collar to make sure I don't forget she's right near me and wants some food too! I'm glad in a day or two I'll be able to walk her downtown maybe as my leg is healing up so fast, thank God. If I had a ruptured tendon I might have been laid up eight to ten weeks, so I am fortunate! Have a great day on the Maine Coast! :)

Good news about your leg and good job keeping track of your calories. Are you using the Fatsecret calorie counter? A good alternative is the MyPlate calorie counter at LiveStrong.com. It is fast and has the largest food database that I've seen. The classic version has no advertisements. Sorry to hear that the computer needs replacing but there are many options these days. Keep up the good work buddy!

Hi info... so far I have not needed to use FS calorie counter but I have in the past. I am rounding things off a bit. I figure if I stay under 2000 calories a day I won't gain. It is quite difficult to say the least. No pain no loss should be the saying in the dieting world. Mindless eating is definitely off the table now that I am keeping track of everything. Thanks for recommending MyPlate again too - in case I do eat out someplace I can go to that site for a check on how much a food item is in calories. I walked about a half mile today, my leg is quite sore and I shouldn't have done it, tomorrow I have an appointment and will not walk or bike but go by car...

It sounds like you should be patient and let your leg rest for a little while. I'm glad that it is not worse though, as a bad injury can really be overwhelming. I see that I had recommended MyPlate already and I suspected that I might have done so but, the important thing is that you have these tools available to you. You sound as if you are already familiar with calorie counting and are doing it from experience. Have a good day Glenn.

I believe Toto thinks she is human and a dog and a cat too. She is a funny dog for sure... They certainly like to eat like humans that's for sure... :)

Glad to hear your leg is better. But the magic word is "caution". It may feel better because you have nursed it and the inflammation is down. As soon as you overdo it, the inflammation will begin again and that is why it is sore. You need to take care on it for a good while. Keeping it elevated should help some too. Glad to hear you are counting calories. Like I said previously, I use the FS version and am so used to it, I fly thru it. I have looked at MyPlate and it looks pretty good. Almost went there before FS. I don't like any generic counting tho, so I try to get the exact caloric/nutrition counts. I observe the nutrition labels very carefully and keep sodium below 2400 if at all possible. Slip up once in a while but I try. Excess sodium is not good, plus it makes you retain water and your weight won't be accurate. Well, Glenn, hope you have a good evening. Did you get that story you were working on finished? Be good, and keep counting :-) Talk later....

Inola - I can't read French yet. But I understand some of what you wrote because I am nearly fluent in Spanish and they are similar enough to read, that you came from Haiti and are in the U.S. now. I know no French yet, I need to take beginning French in college... I know 'je' is 'I' - or so I think, 'despuis' is like 'after' in Spanish, so if I take a semester or two of French I'll be on my way learning French! :)

Nice Glenn! I read your profile and sneak it in there. Here goes: "I pray (prie) that your leg (jambre) gets better (retabli) soon (nouveau/bientot) my dear (cher) friend (ami) and you will be fine (tou sera bien). I speak French (Je parle Francais) a little bit (petit peu) since (depuis)Haiti but (mais)when (des)I(je)(mon) arrive in the USA (Etats Units), it has escaped (echape) me. Have a good night and thank you for stopping by my journal.

Inola thanks for the lesson in French! I remembered 'ami' was 'friend' too. Your French writing is excellent. French is more like English than Spanish. It should be easy for me to learn as I am OK at Spanish and the Romance languages are similar. Thanks for your kind words!
