Sorry this may be long, boring and nonsense, but I just had a moment of clarity and need to vent...
We will call this post “BECOMING A MINIMALIST!”

So recently I moved into my dads house. Put 99% of our belongings in storage and donated truck loads of stuff to goodwill and still our unit is overflowing. Today I looked around my small over crowded room and saw a tee that I bought over summer and have only worn once... then I looked at our overflowing closets... it actually made me feel ill... like this over abundance of “stuff” we have and there are people bare foot and cold... or hungry. I just want to give it all away. I want to live a simpler life. I don’t want this burden of having so much stuff, too much stuff. I had no idea these material things could be holding me back in my journey to a healthier me. It is very true that you become a slave to your belongings... but why? Why have so much clothes that you can’t possibly put them all away? Why have too many shoes for your shoe rack...

So not only do I plan to shed many pounds and get healthier while living at my dads, I now plan to rid myself of these material things that weigh me down and work on my inner happiness.

Anyone here a minimalist? What’s your advice, what’s the best and first thing you would purge in a home?

Getting rid of clothes was a big win for me. I had multiple sizes and held on to things I liked but seldom wore for various reasons. I agree, less is more!

I know, people often feel happy and satisfied surrounded by their stuff. Buying stuff is like security blanket. Then sometimes you think why do you need all of this? There are others who have nothing.

I know goodwill is not the best... but it is on the main road and so convenient to drop off at... There was a catholic charity thrift shop in town, I used to go out of my way to drop things off there but it shut down 😔 I usually sell the good stuff, relocate the big stuff to people I know and always pass on the kid/baby stuff to mamas in need! But sometimes purging large amounts with ease is so satisfying. I homeschool so there is soooooo much stuff involved with that alone... which I am starting to down size that as well. For years we did all schooling “tech free”, but this year I have learned so much can be done on a laptop which means “less stuff”!!! I am getting stressed out over toys, clothes, accessories, shoes and even kitchen items lately... also having 54+pets here means lots of junk for them as well... I feel as though between cleaning and organizing “stuff” and taking care of my kids and pets that I never have enough quality down time for me.

@mal Some material items do bring me great happiness to be around them... that’s why I have so much 🤦‍♀️ But I have come to a point where the only things I am wanting to keep around are my plants, crystals and stones and my meditation tools... oh and my rolling cart of fiber art supplies for crafts, that makes me very happy. Things that are pretty and make me smile I will keep. If looking at something makes me stress I will remove it immediately. I believe your home should be your safe place that makes you less stressed... especially your bedroom, and I realized this sitting here feeling icky about all this junk I don’t really need. So baby steps... and step one is admitting I need a change. Step two is grabbing trash bags and filling the ASAP!!!

I have a facebook page in my town called Buy Nothing where people post what they want to get rid of and other people pick it up. No money changes hands. I have also called a local junk place that recycles, but they charge to take things. Salvation Army or Epilepsy foundation will pick up clothing and accessories if you contact them (in my area anyway)

@abba I’m not on Facebook anymore. I purged that from my life because it was causing me too much anxiety and stress. I may start a new profile and be selective because some things people post are just too much. I guess ignorance is bliss, but I can’t handle how divided and vocal about it our country has become 😔💔 But in my area we have “unconditional give or take” or they call it “uGoT”. Same concept no money... no conditions, just giving to someone who wants your junk!

I'm about to be a minimalist. in August I'll be moving cross country, just to take advantage of my opportunities as a mid 20s guy. I look around the room and see books upon books- my secret weakness. I have read maybe a quarter of them. But I love them. But, I'm packing up my car and driving away from Maryland. only what fits in my car will come with me, so downsizing is certainly on my radar.

Marie Kondo your place. I’m 1/4 of the way there. Look up her books on minimalism and clutter free life.

if you have that many shoes and clothes if you toss them will you at some time pick back up your habit of buying to many again. or is this several years of saving. I have several years of saving which I am glad I did as now I have clothes from back then that I can wear again. but I don't think I have anywhere near what you are talking about. so think it through before you just donate clothes that will fit you. do get rid of things you have no intention of ever having to wear again

"an extra one, is three too many". quote I came across recently. I also am trying to embrace a simpler life style. good luck with your downsizing.

Great, it feels really good to get rid and be free, I am still working on it. One thing that has really helped me, is to stop buying more stuff. I have had to replace a couple of things I got rid of, because it turns out i do use them, or need them. But for the most part I feel my stuff is weighing me down. Especially, in my closet. I am about to get a new job, a formal position, so I will end up wearing my work clothes once again, but as i go through them and see what i am going to wear and not, i will give them away. I normally take my clothes and bedding to Mexico, where people really need it, and it makes me feel better about letting go. I am right there with you, I hate all this stuff. Its very liberating to get rid of it... And especially liberating when you look at stuff to buy and think do I really want to be stuck with this for the next ten years, if the answer is not don't waste you money. Unless I can wear it out, use it up, or eat it, i do not want to buy anything. Including bathroom clutter, ie. makeup, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, body wash. I went in the new local body shop the other day and had to STOP myself from buying stuff i did not need.

@baskington this is YEARS and years of saving clothes. I need to just let go of stuff. I actually don’t shop often, my step mother does and she also doesn’t return stuff, so she gives me bags full of clothes with tags still on them 😱 so I keep them. I need to be pickier... I only allow myself to buy yoga pants with pockets 😂 because I live in them and wear them out!

@ridge where are you headed? My goal is to pack up and move across country in about 6mos, buy property and build a house and we already got rid of 90% of our furniture. But I do plan to be picky and take my time when I decorate and buy things the next time around! My goal is to just use plants as decor. Makes it pretty, somewhat affordable and lively! My daughter is a book hoarder, but she reads them and reads them again. She is 10 and read over 90,000 pages this summer 😱 I think there are about 25 boxes of just novels in our storage unit!!! 😩 her goal is to own a used books store/cat cafe!!

@julia Yes it feels so good. And especially when it helps people who need it. I take the bedding and towels to the humane society, they currently have over 100 horses (some were burnt and injured ☹️💔) from Malibu and the recent fires. During the Thomas fire they had over 100 types of birds in coops. It’s insane, so that’s usually my place I donate what I can! My kids just gave away their seven seater air plane teeter totter 💔😭they loved it but it was huge and we have no room here or in storage. But they are so happy it’s going to a local family with lots of cousins to use it often!!

Hurricane victims in Florida still need things. Many lost everything. The Salvation Army handles hurricanes. When you consider what you what you could throw into your car while running from a hurricane, it helps the decision process. I don't live in Florida, but have friends who do. My home also receives hurricanes, (last year we had a bad one), so I know what my friends on the other side of the Gulf are going through. Hope this helps!
