DairyKing's Journal, 16 April 2012

Up at 3:00 (I know, I know). 5 minute warmup on the elliptical. Ran an easy (under 140 BPM heartrate) 3.0 miles, and then cooled down for about 5 minutes. Beginning to question the sanity of ever being a distance runner. After every 6.0 or 8.0 mile run, my hips feel tight and tender for a couple of days. I don't know if I just haven't built a strong enough base yet (since August last year), or heaven forbid, age is catching up with me. I hate the prospect of being doomed to 5K's and 10K's for the next 40 years or so, but if it turns out to be the hand I am dealt, then so be it.

DW goes in with my daughter for second chemo treatment today. She text'd me this morning, while I was in a mandatory training class, to tell me her hair was starting to fall out. I told her that she better make that wig appointment is she is concerned about it, but I would still love her is she was bald. She was kind of funny and said, "I guess I am conceited, I like my hair." I told her that is not conceited, that is normal. Maybe we'll get some outlandish purple thing or something; but I think she's leaning toward salt and pepper.

DW made ham and black-eyed peas and cornbread Sunday (one of my favorites). A word of advice: Do not eat this before a race. I figure by Tuesday or Wednesday, my weight will have stabilized. Well, that's all for now. Hope everyone has a fine day.

I hope that I don't have to get up that early when I start running. I think 4:30 comes too early already. Keeping your wife in my thoughts and prayers. Her hair will grow back but I understand how she feels. I stress about mine all the time and I don't have a reason for it to be as thin as it is.

I hope your DW finds a way to deal with her hair loss.... That's half the battle. My daughter dropped on me over the weekend... That after the 5k, I had better keep training, as we were entering the Great Eastern Run... 16 or 17 miles!! ... She then said it's not a problem... It's not until September 2013, so you've plenty of time to train!!! Mmmm not sure.

My left hip used to get really sore and tender after my 'longer' runs (they were really only 4-6 miles) - and since I've been sticking to my training this year, I haven't noticed it as much.. so maybe having the little 'break' from your running earlier this year gave you a little set back.. I'm sure your base will strengthen back up again - it's crazy how quickly the body will de-condition if you stop for a couple weeks, but you're still very fit, so I'm sure you'll be fine running some longer distances soon!

Yum, yum. Where are you again, that they have black-eyed peas and cornbread? My mom had all kinds of wigs, yet rarely wore them. She preferred having them off her head. The unexpected thing for us was losing eyebrows. Since she lived in Mexico, I had to send all kinds of eyebrow pencils there for her (and my stepfather) to experiment with. The next interesting thing was how her hair came in after chemo. She was salt and pepper before chemo, it came back in all white until it was longer, and then it was salt and pepper again...the most beautiful salt and pepper you ever could see, like God Himself had painted it. HUGS to your wife. She's a hero.

Well, Sk1nny, 16 or 17 miles is certainly a challenging goal! Takes a lot of commitment and putting in a lot of mile per week. It will be interesting to see if you have that passion after a 5 or 10K race. Heather, I never even thought about the eyebrows; I'm not going to be the one to tell her about that! I don't know if she'll actually wear the wigs or not; I think it depends on how natural it looks on her. Thanks for the encouragement, Erika. I don't know if I should be glad that someone as young as you had the same pain, as in 'misery loves company', but I take solace, for now, in that it may get better as the base builds up. And, even though we live in central Illinois, I introduced my wife to black-eyed peas and cornbread when we were stationed in Virginia. She's got everybody back here hooked on them now. I guess we're trying to "Southernize" these farmers here. :) Thanks all for the encouragement!
