debrafrederick's Journal, 09 April 2016

Hi guys! Today we went and bought two more bottle calves, we have the other two weaned and they are grazing happily in the pasture now. The two new ones are named T-bone and Porterhouse, the older ones are Dinner and Supper and all of them are the Moos Brothers. We have determined that if we feed 4 out, sell 3, then we can pay for the processing of the one we keep for food. Our very own grass fed beef. It was always one of our dreams to be able to raise our own meat and vegetables, we are closer than we have ever been. Today was spent walking around different pastures looking at different calves, picking the two we want then heading to the house to muck and rake and get ready for the delivery. There was a lot of movement involved, but all I claim on my exercise diary is standing. They are a bit generous in calorie burning amounts here so standing is the most reasonable for what amounted to a total of 3 hours working the Post office and 5 hours of wandering around pastures and barns looking at tiny Moos. It was a great day! I think I got a sunburn on my nose! See ya tomorrow!

LOL Susy, that's why the Food type names, it reminds me of why they are here. You can plant veggies and nurture them, talk to them, defend them against bugs, weather and other things attempting to eat them. You get attached to them, but when harvesting time comes you gather and thank them for their sacrifice and eat well. I'm hoping that by looking at my moos in the same way, as a crop for my table, I will nurture them and thank them for their sacrifice, it works with the chickens too. I can't kill them, as the primary caregiver I can't bring myself to end their lives, but hubby does that part, then I separate the creature I raised from a baby from the piece of meat in front of me and I process and cook it. At least I know my animals had a good life of love and plenty, unlike the factory farm animals who exist in unnatural conditions.

I salute you for doing this. I think you get more calorie burn than standing but agree they are generous with the allotments. (I don't have the mentality to raise animals for food, but know that it is just b/c of where I live and how I was raised. I call it the city of Massachusetts. I do however, grow my vegetables. There is nothing better than garden tomatoes or cucumbers.) I like to daydream about your life. Like the commercials for FarmersOnly.com. Have a great day Debra, and God bless you.
