northernmusician's Journal, 15 January 2015

I thought I'd share. I'm making this entry with my android tablet. I had the option of buying a very nice tablet with windows 8, but I turned it down. You see, Microsoft decided that I, as a laptop user, must certainly prefer a tablet type interface. Sorry MS, you were wrong. In fact, MS, you made up my mind to dump you for, well, anything else.

You didn't even make it so I could easily set up my laptop the way I wanted it. I had to go to third party vendors. Now I'm sitting here on my tablet while your upgrade (more likely to be a downgrade) saps my morning productive time. So far, you've taken an hour. When I decided it was time for a new tablet, I sought out a product without your hooks in it. When it's time for a new computer , I guarantee you it will not be a MS operating system. I am done.

I have been a defender of MS systems since I was a DOS user. Now I'm looking for my next OS so I'm ready to dump you completely. Laptop is still updating. I truly suspect once it is done I'll be spending the next few hours putting it back the way I want it. Thanks a bunch.

I am always happy to meet someone who shares my disdain for Windows 8. It's fine I suppose if what you really want is a tablet. But I have a tablet for tablet things. When I want to use my laptop, I prefer a laptop.

Last year, after endless prompts, I upgraded my W8 oto 8.1 just to get "them" to stop bugging. It was a nightmare. I had to install another HARD DRIVE to get rid of it. Never EVER use 8.1. It's HORRIBLE. Tell EVERYONE!

Oh, good. A questionnaire. Don't mind if I do.

Oh, good. It's setting things up now. :(

It says it's 'taking care of a few things'. Why am I terrified. An hour and a half in. Still no access to get to work.

Wish you'd have said that earlier, jipper. I decided to install it to 'get them off my back. Lol. Won't b e laughing long, I'm sure.

My Win 8.1 upgrade went horribly also. The first time it messed something up and for the next week the system locked up every few minutes and had to be rebooted. We did a "reset" and went back to Win 8....only to have the system force the upgrade on us again a few days later. It went better the second time, but there are still problems that haven't been resolved. I'm seriously debating moving to Apple next time and making a clean break from Microsoft.

1 hour and 45 minutes. Fortunately, Classic Shell, a free program is still working giving me a traditional start menu. Time to delete IE and dump a bunch of unwanted 'apps'. (Does anyone sell programs anymore?)

It does take an excruciatingly long time. I recall I thought it had gotten stuck at some point, but forced myself to leave it alone....eventually it finished whatever it was supposedly cleaning up.

Did you lose files?
15 Jan 15 by member: northernmusician
No, didn't lose files. When I had to do a "reset" back to Win 8 I lost programs I had installed but no files.

Still using XP and Win7 at home. What I've seen of Win8 I don't care for. Luckily I have access to software and tools so I can fix issues and restore my OS completely very quickly if needed, a perk of working in the IT field. However MS does not make things easy.

I am a mint Linux girl on my personal machines. The Windows 'upgrade' to 8.1 is notorious for issues. All I have been doing lately is fixing my kids machines after this latest update......However, remember Millenium anyone? lol

Okay. Win 8 just stole classic shell. Now control panel isn't where it was. AUGH!!! So DONE!

Reinstalled and it works now. Nicholaix - A friend told me he uses mint and likes it. Do you know of an emulator where I might try it?

Just getting the hang of 7 after xp. Don't even want to think about 8.

Search you can find any program. You can put an icon to call up the old desktop on the start up screen. New windows is going to take a lot to get used to for me.

I'd agree with that, Bill. Everything else seems to get simpler to use and more intuitive. I feel like I'm in a boxing match with this thing.

I dual booted Mint and windows for a bit to try it, after a week I was only using the linux. I like that I can customize and have only what I want. I am not aware of an emulator, but that doesnt mean one isn't out there. If you are interested in trying a dual boot on your machine there are tons of good tutorials out there and a ton of information on the Linux site.
