My experiment with eating a lot of calories has been going as expected. My official weigh in will be tomorrow. Right now I am sitting at 176.4lbs which is up since last Friday by 3.8 pounds. I have gained a half inch around my midsection as well. I did this experiment to see how I felt eating this much food and to see how much weight I would gain. Since last Friday I averaged 3432 calories per day. I was aiming for 3100 calories but I went overboard for the sake of experimenting. I am going to try to stay closer to 3100 next week. Once I reach a weight of 180lbs I plan to cut calories back and start lowering my body fat again. Basically, I am making myself heavier in hopes of growing some muscle mass. It’s a tough pill to swallow after working so hard to lose 50 pounds but I feel like I am in control enough to continue with my plan.

I have noticed that with the increased carbs I do not have the steady energy that I had when I was eating a high fat and very low carb diet. I find myself thinking a nap would be nice and I yawn a lot more with the additional carbs. On the other side of the coin, the carbs are helping with workout stamina and recovery. I use to be sore for up to three days after working out when I was eating low carb. With the carbs, I find that I just feel a little tight the next day. So there is a balance there to be found. I plan to continue experimenting to dial in the right amount of carbs to fit my energy and workout needs.

One of my weekly tips was to experiment with your calories and your macros from time to time. My example above is what I am talking about. Stay in control of what you’re doing and see how your body reacts. Has your weight loss stalled? Maybe ADDING calories will help you? You never know until you try it. It does not hurt to experiment, especially since everyone is different when it comes to activity levels, metabolism and food tolerances.

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Have you been lifting super heavy, right at the limit? I find anything else is just a waste. I do seem to be paying a price for lifting so heavy with slower recovery but I am gaining muscle.

I guess "super heavy" is relative, but for me as a new lifter, yes, it's heavy. :) I am on a progression program, so each work out gets heavier and the last set on the major lifts is done to failure. I am at the point where I am setting new personal records each workout. The extra food seems to help with that.

Do you have access to a scale that has the bioelectric impedance handles? My gym has the InBody230 which prints out reports that give water, dry, fat and muscle mass figures and then calculates the percentages. It also estimates the BMR based on the measurements which is very consistent with the published equations. I would be interested in how your numbers change over time. My next weigh in is next Friday. Then I think I'll up the frequency to once a week from once a month.

I do not have access to any type of body analysis. I work out in my home gym. I am keeping an eye on the crossfit place in my town though. They have a mobile body analysis that visits from time to time. I want to go next time and get a more acurate body fat reading than what I get with my home measurements. I weigh in every week because I like to see what how well I have done for the week and adjust if necessary. Since BMR changes over time, I like to keep tight track of things. I think you will like weekly weigh ins.

I can't imagine eating that much food anymore! But,; if you are having trouble with getting in the calories- head on over to P.F. Changs for a piece of their great wall of chocolate cake! 2,240 calories!!!!!!

I think that would put me over the top learning coach!! haha That is an insane amount of calories for cake! Good thing I dont eat wheat, otherwise I would be tempted! haha @Bill, thats cool, I am curious to see what happens. I bet you would be surprised at how many calories you burn with as active as you are. When I was eating at 1800 calories to lose weight I never would have thought that I could maintiain my weight at somewhere close to 3000 calories. It's nuts!

Yes, I am SO GLAD they were out of it the day I went!! Came home and looked up the nutritional (?) value. Cured me forever!!

Interesting stuff. Are you going to record your body fat % when you reach 180 and then see what you get to as you work your way back down. As for the cake, it must be a huge piece. We don't have a PF Chang's around here, probably a good thing.
