northernmusician's Journal, 07 May 2014

My new avatar is a canvas duffle bag crammed with all my old overweight clothes. It feels great to hit it. Weigh in time is still an hour and a half away. I thought I'd post twice today. This journal entry is for Puhpine, who is turning into a rock star on this site. I think of it simply as an addendum to what she has written about hidden eating. I'm not calling her out in any way.

How are you made accountable? Log it or we'll find you. If you've never heard it, go listen to Junk Food Junkie by Larry Groce. I'm Bruce, and I'm a Junk Food Junkie. In the olden days, many pounds ago, I used to tell the wife I was heading down to the store to get a treat in the evening and ask her if she would like one. She would dutifully say no. I would put on my biggest, bulkiest coat and head off to the store. When I got home, I'd take off my coat and take the single item I knew she'd like and she would mooch half of it. It was so funny. She'd laugh and grin while we had our little snack together. I'm sure she was trying to save me from myself.

She's an early to bed person. I'd give her an hour and then... go pull the sweetarts, cheetos, can of coke, and two or three chocolate bars out of my coat. It was glorious. When I was done, I would carefully cram the tell-tale signs into the center of the middle of the garbage can. If there was no garbage in the can, I would clean up. If there was nothing to clean up, I'd make garbage. Does that sound like a junkie to you? I'm Bruce, and I'm a recovering Junk Food Junkie.

Hi Bruce... my name is Kathy and I too was a junk food junkie. I was on a first name basis with Little Debbie. She and I partied everyday over 2-3 packs of cupcakes. I loved her and she loved me. Long story short. I don't allow her into the house and give her a nod when I pass her in the grocery story. Awesome post. Thanks to Maud for getting the ball rolling.

Hi Bruce, Maud and Kathy. I'm Bella, I'm a recovering junk food junkie. I never had to eat in secret because poor Cutty had seen me tip both sides of the scale. I really never hid any of my eating from anyone because I was so adamant about 'accept me as I am'. But despite the unconditional acceptance I did sometimes order an extra 'something' like .. 3 cheeseburgers instead of 2 when I was picking up take out for us.. .and eat one on the way home because I just didn't feel ONE double meat, double cheese burger with fries and chocolate milkshake would be enough.

What? I can't challenge someone I respect and like? Since when.

I’m Chica, I am a Junk food junkie that is always in recovery mode. In the past I did not have a problem with consuming (in private) sheet cakes (I had so many birthdays and special occasions I lost count) or large pizzas in one sitting. I finally realized that I was just eating my emotions instead of acknowledging the actual problem. In recent days I have managed a little more control. I think to myself sure, you can eat the whole cake but how would you feel afterwards? Well it’s been 10 days of cleaner eating and I feel great! Along this 10 day stretch I’ve been tested several times. But I made a promise to myself to not let anyone else jeopardize my cleaner eating but me. I will eat cake again, I am certain, but it will be when I truly want it and not just because it is there. So I am practicing moderation, eating with mindfulness and intention. Wish me luck!

I'm a carb addict. I will do anything for bread. Evil bad horrible things to my dignity for bread.

I'm Yolanda, and I'm a recovering junk food junkie. As a teenager I remember sneaking candy bars and soda out of my grandmas pantry, then sneaking off to eat it in the woods. As an adult I would chomp down on hidden junk food in my laundry room, where the husband and kids never venture. I used to eat dinner at work, come home and make a little something for the kids, then order take out for my husband and I. I am also a recovering fast food addict. I would swing through the drive thru at any opportunity for a 'snack' of burgers, fries and shakes. I am fourteen months clean, learning to practice moderation and setting a good example for my kiddos.

Serious junk food junkie here. Sweets mainly. I'm not big on chips and things, but love me some sugar. The funny thing is that as long as I stay away from it, I'm ok... But let me put that ONE bite in my mouth and I'm a gonner. A serious, serious gonner. I'm still learning how to cope with it. I wish I knew why I am like that and I wish that it were not a problem. But it's such a great relief to know that other people deal with it too. So I know I'm not the only one.

Wow... so true. I had my hidden eating stuff too. I'd bet a lot of folks on here did. The embarrassed, *shame* eating... Ugh. That's something I don't miss.
