Hello my name is Brent and I feel like I am at an AA meeting. I didn’t weigh in last week. My excuse was that I was going on a three day fishing trip and didn’t have time to weigh in before I left. Truth is, I thought my weight would be up so I skipped it. Tisk tisk! On top of that, this is the second week in a row that I haven’t done any weightlifting, only walking. Here is why.

On the 22nd of last month I fished in a bass tournament. I only got 4 hours of sleep before I had to leave the house at 3am. I totally bonked during the tournament. By I noon I could hardly stand up any longer, my legs were shaking, back cramping and my balance was off. Nothing like this has ever happened in my life. When the tournament was over most of the muscles in my body felt “pumped”, as if I had just worked out. It was strange and really got me to thinking about what I had been doing to end up in this condition. I was 100% physically exhausted and nothing I ate helped me feel better that day.

Later that evening a newsletter arrived to my inbox from Nerd Fitness (its great website if you’re a nerdy fitness type like me!) and wouldn’t you know it, the subject was about exhaustion and recovery. A lot of things that the article talked about, I was doing wrong. Not enough sleep, not enough recovery time between workouts and probably not eating enough on some days.

So I began thinking, how do I fix this? First I took two weeks off of my workouts. Now I am feeling great again. Next week I will start working out again, but instead of weight training 4 days a week I am cutting it down to only 3 days. Previously I had 2 exercise routines with about 9 exercises in each. One focused on legs, back and core strength and the other one was a total upper body work out. I would do each of the 9 exercises two times a week for a total of 36 exercises per week.

During my down time and in an attempt to resolve my exhaustion problem, I took all 18 exercises from the two routines and combined them. I then broke the list of 18 exercises into three separate 6 exercise routines which I will do M-W-F. This way I am only doing each exercise one time a week with a total of 18 instead of 36 exercises per week. This should allow me better recovery and let my body heal with the minimal sleep I seem to get. I also plan to add more reps (from 10 to 12) on each exercise since I am only doing them once a week now.

I’m really hoping this works since it’s impossible for me to get any more than 6 hours of sleep a night due to my busy schedule. A lot of times, when I wake up early to work out, I only get around 5 hours of sleep which really wears on you when you do it four times a week!

My mind is where it needs to be, I REALLY WANT TO WORK OUT but my body just couldn’t keep up with the eager beaver plan I laid out for myself. I guess I just learned the hard way, that when it comes to physical fitness, more is not always better!

Wish me luck next week as I start my new routine.

Hi Brent, i am Maud and i am obese. (if you want aa-meeting style, you got it!) i wish you luck with your new routine. (or do you want me to do that next week, not now?) anyway, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, That is not my point of view but a very ancient book once said that. In order to reach your goal you must both heed your soul who sets your goals but also heed your body that must achieve what you set out to do... There must be balance in both.

I warned you not to tip over Brent. I kinda figured those fish were going to be too heavy for you.:P I'm glad you listened to the signs and did not ignore them too long. Best wishes with the new routine. And as they say in the meetings, thanks for sharing.

I'm a fan of Nerd Fitness too! I used to do split exercises, doing upper body one day and lower body next day, five times a week and I am having a little trouble switching from that to the M-W-F plan of the Academy, because I think it's harder for me to build the habit with a day off every other day. I still have to get used to it. So far, I've kinda fallen off the exercise wagon trying to switch, but hopefully I'll figure it out. I bet if you have questions about whether or not to up your reps, you can just email them. They're pretty great about responding.

Yeah for sure! Nerd fitness rocks! I love the newsletters. I just got a new one 10 minutes ago and I’m eager to read it. The off days are tough for me too because I want to eat just as much as I do on the days that I do work out. Creatures of habit I guess. I just have to keep reminding myself that working out does not build strength or muscle, it's the resting between workouts that does! Thanks for the comment mereberg. It's appreciated. Good luck with your plan too!

I can kind of relate to working yourself too hard. I pushed myself so hard before on the treadmill to the point of spraining my left foot. So that set me back 2 weeks to let it heal. Then other stuff started happening to me which set me off even more. That was last year. This time around I started out slowly and have worked myself up through the weeks and I've gotta say wow I do a lot for working out then I have my whole life. My boyfriend has told me that I need to have a least one day of rest so my body won't be pushed too much. I've gone from working out 3-4 days a week to 6 days a week. I do the treadmill, weights, swim a half mile and now I've added in an hour of a water aerobics class. My highest weight was at 530 and I'm down to 333 maybe less won't know until this Saturday what I'm at now. I have completely changed my life style from eating what ever and never working out to a high protein low carbs and working out. I have lost more weight in 3 weeks then I have in 2 months from the past. You got this and will succeed!! Best of luck Brent. :)

I would say its the lack of sleep for sure. As my brother-in-law always says "You can't be a rockstar and be healthy, you have to choose one or the other" AKA eat like a nutritionist Train like an athlete, sleep like a baby!

Hi, Brent! I go by, Lu, and in my past life I've eaten a spoonful of Eagle condensed milk...and liked it (LOL)! Just finished a half-cup fresh blueberries. Here's to making changes :D

I'm pretty sure Chad is right, its the lack of sleep. But right now I can't change how much I sleep so I will go a little easier with training. I hope to get job close to home this summer and gain 2 hours of my life back. I'm on mobile so I'm keeping short.

This is AA for foodies. lucky for us all "isims" weather food or booze seem to be witty, intelegent, funny and full of self sabotage. Try turning off all technology off in your house and just sit and breath for 5 mins before bed, it sounds "hippy" but it helps, good luck!

I agree with Tamzin79, it is AA for foodies. I have always said my greatest addiction was food and now I guess I am not alone, anymore at least. Sorry to read about your losing sleep and the Bass tourney too. But the worst for you I see was the sleep loss. I imagine you will be trying a lot harder to get in that much needed rest, and thus you will be getting back on track and keep on working out too. Good for you, it is nice to be a geek sometimes, and when it is a life commitment it is important to be a good geek and get all the info you can. imho that is.
