DairyKing's Journal, 23 January 2013

Good morning, FS Warriors! It's a lovely January AM at 17F. Some flurries expected later this afternoon, but apparently nothing in the forecast of significance. Finally got back on the treadmill last night for a 30 minute romp at a moderate pace - walking pace, that is. Following the leg infection, the Doc told me to walk - not run. But then I came down with the flu, and didn't do anything. Now I'm back on course and expect to be slim, trim and speedy by year's end. I know that I won't be able to go for a month before I'm running again, no matter what the Doc says; that's just what happens. Of course, my running usually isn't much faster than most peoples' walking anyway.

Dw had half a chicken breast, stovetop stuffing and yellow corn waiting on me for supper last night. She's finally learning to cook for just the two of us, without leftovers that would feed the National Guard. It was good, full of carbs, but relatively small portions, at least compared to my normal fare. This morning I packed some Progresso soup, and made up some thin turkey slices, with a little salad dressing, wrapped in romaine lettuce. There's ony 120 calories in a whole package of that deli turkey. I'm getting better at using the romaine lettuce, but I have to cut that main rib out of each leaf, and eat it like a stick of celery. I don't know how you'd wrap anything with romaine lettuce otherwise.

I have been down this dieting road so many times that you'd think that I would absolutely know what works for me, and what does not. Ironically, I do know what works, but I don't like to admit it. The fact of the matter is that I just don't have the discipline to eat sweets in moderation - unless I plan ahead and ration the stuff. If it's just laying around the house, and I choose to eat "just one", well, you know how that goes. It's one more, and then one more, and pretty soon, it's "Well, I've blown it, might as well go for the gusto!" So, what works for me is this: I just don't take that first bite - unless I pack it in my lunch for a planned snack - and even that is dangerous! I find, for me anyway, it's not that tough to just avoid the stuff in the first place.

Well, enough rambling for now. I hope all of my FS Friends have a really good day. Toodles!

Oh I can relate! Step by step we meander on this journey. I hope the forecast is wrong and you get a nice dump of snow! Had to laugh about leftovers sufficient to feed the national guard. It is a different way of cooking for only two. I still make too much spaghetti, rice and mashed potatoes when I do make them!

The Romaine rib is hassle. I wrap stuff lengthwise when I leave it in, or I guess fold it up more like a taco - rib on the bottom.

Yeah, Carol, I think farm girls grow up knowing how to feed a hungry clan - which is a good thing - unless you are a clan of two. :)
