caged liberty's Journal, 06 May 2008

Today I made lamb chops for the family and thought I could add one or two to my plate seeing as it was all meat and fat and no carbs. My husband finally commented on my diet (after six weeks of watching me silently!)

Being a doctor, he was concerned that eating so much protein was not healthy and could actually damage the kidneys. Apparently meats and poultry are high in protein and meat especially releases a lot of ammonia which the kidney finds hard to process.

After finishing his lecture on the hazards of such diets and the fact that several friends who attempted Atkins all regained the weight, he saw the look of dejection on my face and said.."Just make sure you drink a lot of water"

So a warning to everyone: Drinking a lot of water is not only to stave off hunger, but also very vital to keep your kidneys from being polluted by excessive ammonia!!

Mb, I married a strong silent type, he doesn't really get involved in what I do normally. I think the fact that I made 3 consecutive trips in search of 'real' heavy cream triggered his curiosity and then seeing me eat lamb chops and a massive dollop (does anyone use that word anymore?) of ranch dressing got him concerned. About the water, any fluid is good for you as long as it doesn't contain caffeine (caffeine is a diuretic which means it dehydrates!). I hate plain water and flavored water is a blessing.

Nods savagely... I am gonna be a strong silent type when I grow up! until then I'm afraid I'll still be spewing out me usual big dollops (yes I still use it - great word!) of verbal horsemanure. One of the things that confuses me at times is the fact that no matter what ya try... doesn't it always seem as if there is a danger, a downside or a contrary opinion. So, in the end I suppose that once we research, really listen to our bodies and remember the golden basics (water etc) we can then make our informed decisions and see what happens.. have to say...I'm getting much more enjoyment out of this time on atkins than I ever did on anything else....[pausing now to try either being strong or silent...DEFINITLEY cannot do both together as yet!)

Hello!I was reading ur comment and couldn't help but get scared so i looked it up in my atkins book and i read that "it takes alot of kindney disease to be unable to handle the protein in the diet.people with creatinine levels below 4 generally have no prob. and he goes on to say that if ur kindney develop a prob it's because there was already an exsiting prob u didnt know about.

Glad you pointed this out. I do pretty well with water but I know I'm not getting 64 oz on most days.
