Its the tech. I have the same problem. I am hiring a tech guy to program my router to block all social media, video games, and youtube during the week.

What a great idea. I loved my bike when I was a kid. My brother and I were never in the house. no phones or computer back then.

thats all I did as a kid- rode my bike around the block- and play street hockey with the boys. I was always outside. And being surrounded by boys kept me an active tom boy as a child. I grew up with the first playstation- yet still was outside 99% of the time. Kids today are addicted to video games and sitting on their butts haha

My parents wouldn't let us be in the house if it was nice outside. Mostly so they could have peace and quiet not so much pushing us to be active or exercise.

Well since I'm trying to wake up at 6am everyday now, have a coffee and what not, get little man up, a milk and go for a bike ride. ....I think I'll make the other two come with me every morning too... both are over weight, might as well....
........ oldest kid seems to be socially stunted. he's so controlling that it's hard for him to keep friends so kicking him out of the house is some sort of torture for him... I have even given him a wad of money and said "you have a phone, a bike and money... go have an adventure, call me if you need help ... get out of the house" he wouldn't go. if my mom gave me money and told me to go have fun... damn right I would... I would find SOMETHING to do. not him. ......... middle child, if I could trust the little bugger to not get hauled home by the cops or something he would take the money and run!! but spend it all on candy and gain another 10 pounds lol..... I think structure is the answer...forcing them to exercise! ......... like I have video games too but I made forts and biked, swam in the lake, hung out at the store, go to the park and hang with the rest of the kids.... I dunno, normal human stuff.

Haha, wow! I love this tactic to get in some exercise! I love biking too as a kid. It was so nice to get out of the house.

Nice way to motivate yourself and the kids!

Nice Hunter!! I like your effort to get some activity into your boys lives what with all the other computer and social media distractions now available to them.

You'll probably get more creative about "incentivizing" them as you continue with the program. Once they're more fit, you can have mini races with the winner getting more computer time or cash. You could have secret rewards, like not let them know what the reward will be but at the end give it to the one who complains the least. Hopefully they will come to enjoy it more.

Holy shiznit! Will you be my Mom?!? I want a wad of cash, a phone, a bike, and an ultimatum to go have an adventure!!! Don't have to tell me twice.... My kids are in hiding, cause every time they see me I utter the same 3 words --- "GET A JOB!"

You're a GREAT mama! Positive reinforcement works best. You are smart to dangle their gizmos carrots to get them to perform. "B" ain't happening til "A" is done is my mantra. Great lessons learned from reading "The Powerful Child" By Dr. Kevin Leman (he is so funny, a hoot to listen to - check out his podcasts too). He also says, "Let reality be the teacher!" Ain't that the truth?

when I was young, NEVER in the house. Sun up to sun down. I was riding my bike. EXPLORING!!!!. Kids can not do that now. Its just so dangerous. But why should they when they can live an entire false life online. Im 42 years old and I am a gamer. My life now is work, and gaming. I get off work, I go home and into a fantasy world I step. My RL friends all found other things to worry about. So its just games now. I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I don't party. I spend VERY little money on myself. I don't need to. But I also understand the need for exercise and living healthy. The two can go hand in hand. Keep setting rules for gaming like you have. You play after WE play. Im proud of you.

Christine... save 10 bucks here or there and you'll be surprised what you can get. just get a jar you keep hidden away.

Ya that's how things run here, do your chores, homework, eat your vegetables and after that I don't really care.... but they make it sound like I'm trying to kill them lol.... I basically ask that one does dishes, the other puts them away, take out garbage and sweep the floor... not too hard in my opinion. .... in anycase, once that is done they can totally go on adventures and play the rest of the day till 7 or 8 pm depending on when the sun goes down.
