Seeking OTC equivalent to Phendimetrazine / Phentermine
Scalezrobat-Best of luck to you with your appointment with your psychiatirist. I couldn't get a doctor to listen to me until I ended up in the hospital severely depressed with the only option left being ECT. The doctor finally decided to try Phentermine and it worked. I'm on a very small dose of only 15mg a day. The typical dose for weight loss is 37.5 mg.

"When you are depressed, the only thing you really want to do is stay in bed. The pain is so strong that you cannot motivate yourself to do anything. If you do get out of bed, you cannot wait to get back in it." That is how I felt when I was severly depressed. I didn't just want to go to bed I wanted to be in a casket. I prayed every night to let god take me and give my life to someone with cancer that just wanted one more day. I'm feeling better and I'm still here. I'm here for a reason. Maybe I'm here to send encouragement to someone that is reading this. Don't give up and don't let other people's comments and ignorance about this disease get you down. Best wish and stay strong. Smile

Seeking OTC equivalent to Phendimetrazine / Phentermine
Please be aware that I am in no way shape or form advocating the use of Phentermine or stimulants for the use of depression. The latest consensus in the medical community is that they don’t know what causes depression and they believe it is a multifaceted disease that may be caused or influenced by a genetic predisposition, environmental factors or a low grade general inflammation in the brain or body. I have a long family history of depression and anxiety. I believe my depression is caused by a genetic predisposition and I have a severe form. When the drug companies developed their first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors they believed that depression was caused by a lack of serotonin. Since then they have done studies and they have found that you can artificially decrease serotonin in the brain of some people and they don’t become depressed. They also found that by decreasing serotonin in people with a family history or possible genetic predisposition resulted in severe deadly form of depression. The general consensus is that antidepressant are helpful with depression but usually it helps people mainly who have a serve form. Treatment resistive depression is treated with adding atypical antipsychotics, stimulants or drugs from different classes.
Please excuse the long reply. This is the hot topic for me. Please consider trying different things to relieve your depression. Intensive exercising, herbs like 5HT, St. John’s Wort, Curcumen, SAME , classic antidepressants or psychotherapy. NOTE: TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE ADDING SUPPLEMENTS IF YOU’RE CURRENTLY TAKING ANTIDEPRESSANT. SOME ARE CONTRAINDICATED. Also consider having your vitamin D levels drawn and have the doctor check your thyroid and glycosylated hemoglobin.
The main thing I’m trying to convey is to not become too discouraged if the first treatment fails. Continue to try different approaches. I sincerely hope that you find something that will finally bring you relief.

The nice thing about this forum is that the original author gets an e mail message indicating that someone has replied to a comment that you have made. At this point, you can decide to add a comment if you have anything to say about your original message. Two years ago, I posted that message and I’m responding to your post.
I originally found the forum through a quick Google search. I was seeing if Phentermine was ever used for depression. The reason, I became so frustrated with the replies from other authors is that no one gave a response that was encouraging. Everyone knows that making better food choices and exercising will result in weight loss. I believe that I have a food addiction. I struggle everyday with making good food choices just like an alcoholic struggles with taking a drink. It’s a daily battle with trying to keep the weight off!
At the time of my last post, I HAD NOT taken Phentermine for 5 years and I’d lost 40 pounds from going to Weight Watchers. I continued to follow the diet and continued to work out. My depression, however, spiraled out of control. The Welbutrin I was taking was not working any more. At this point, I stopped taking the Welbutrin and started to take some nutritional supplements. (BIG MISTAKE FOR ME PERSONALLY!) I ate organic food, and completely eliminated MSG and other preservatives from my diet. My weight dropped to 115 pounds. I was 170 at my heaviest point. I finally was thin. Too thin. I was so depressed. I could not eat, sleep, and I was having terrible anxiety attacks. I was suicidal. I wanted to die. It was so hard to finally be thin and to feel so exhausted. Everything I read said, if you exercise your brain will release endorphins and you’ll feel better. I also read that if I was eating right, I’d feel better. I was doing everything right and I still felt terrible.
My husband, finally put me into the hospital. The psychiatrist couldn’t believe I was still alive. I was crying uncontrollably. I looked terrible. He asked me if anything had helped me with my depression and I told him that Prozac and Phentermine helped. He wanted to try Prozac and Ritalin. I asked if he could substitute the Phentermine for the Ritalin as Ritalin is a scheduled 2 drug and Phentermine is a schedule 4. (Schedule 2 drugs are stronger). He started me on a small dose of Phentermine 15mg and added a larger dose of Prozac. I felt like living after one dose. I was discharged on this combination and continued to improve. A year later, I’m still on this combination. I have gained back 25 pounds since started this combination. I know I’m on a weight loss drug! My sleep has returned to normal and I’m a functional member of society again. This medication saved my life! I’m now continuing my battle with my food addiction. I don’t want to gain any more weight back. I need positive support so I’m going to go back to either Weight Watchers or TOPS.
My psychiatrist indicated that Phentermine isn’t a typically drug used for depression, but in my case it has worked and saved my life. I would suggest seeing a psychiatrist about your depression and don’t let your depression get out of control. The psychiatrist will probably try some different combinations of medication and he/she may EVENTUALLY try a stimulant like Ritalin if you’re treatment resistant like I was.
I sincerely wish you the best in finding something that helps you with your depression. Don’t ever give up! Message me if you need encouragement or you have any questions! Peace

Piano Noir..What is wrong with people these days? You ask a simple question and you get condescending replies. (I hope I can say something that is a little more encouraging here). I have suffered from depression my entire life and I've taken different antidepressants and I have taken Phentermine, too. Phentermine not only helped with weight loss, but it has been the best medication for me for my depression, too. Unfortunately, you can't take Phentermine long term and you have to be really careful about taking Phentermine with other antidepressants. Phentermine was thought to increase epinephrine and dopamine, but they also found that it increases serotonin, too. If you take this with another medication that increases serotonin you can have a build up serotonin and it can cause life-threatening toxicity in your body. I have been on the search for a medication similar to Phentermine, too. I'm not searching for this medication for weight loss, just the affect it has on me with regard to depression. I have been successful with losing 40 pounds over the last year with a program that I weighed in weekly and exercise. I didn't take any medication. (I'm certainly better at losing weight when I'm accountable to someone). Our community has a free support group that is called "Take Off Pounds Sensibly" -It is similar to Weight Watchers but it is free. This may be helpful to you. The other medication that you might want to ask your doctor about is Welbutrin. I started Welbutrin a few months ago for depression. It has a side effect of weight loss in some people. I found that it does help increase my energy level. (For me it isn't as effective as Phentermine, but it does help some.)Be very careful if you start this medication. It has a side effect of decreasing the seizure threshold in some people. Take it exactly as prescribed. What the CONDESENDING people on this form have to realize is that obesity is an epidemic in our society. They're so many physical, mental, and biological components to this disease. Researchers are just starting to realize it is more than just dieting and exercise. Try and remember that are bodies are programmed to hold on to weight and we are fighting an up hill battle every time we loss weight and try and keep it off. PLEASE BE SUPPORTIVE AND STOP PATRONIZING PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR HELP!! Good luck Piano Noir..If I find anything that is as helpful as Phentermine, I'll let you know. Hang in there Smile
