I've been heavy all my life and started my first diet when I was 17 years old. It seems that was the kicking off point for a life of diet, splurge, diet, splurge. Each time having minor success followed by big gains. Sound familiar anyone?

Here I am 17 years later bigger than ever. But now....my knees are going bad. In Oct '07 I began to notice stiffness and pain when I climbed stairs. By the time I eventually made it to the doctor (April '08), I was severely limping and in a lot of pain. The doctor had no sympathy and simply said "lose the weight or replace the knee - your call."

While I would have appreciated a pat on the hand…something…the very blunt delivery was probably the best thing I could have ever heard. I finally realized I have to get serious about this....my weight was effecting my mobility.

Atkins advantage
Hi Chantazzle - The Atkins book tells us to track net carbs. As one of the previous entries indicate, Atkins bars are loaded with sugar alcohols which are not supposed to impact our blood sugar and can be subtracted from the total carbs. Personally, I stick with carbs minus fiber and avoid the sugar alcohol. Some studies show that a few of the sugar alcohols DO impact our bloods sugars...plus..some of them can upset your stomach. Have you had a chance to read the book? If not, I would suggest picking it up. There is a lot of great info there. Plus, as you progress through the phases you will be able to add previously restricted foods back into your eating plan. So those fruits aren't gone forever. Smile Good Luck

how many calories should I be consuming?
Hi Julie -

I don't know how breastfeeding effects your calorie needs, but when I wanted to caculate mine I started by determining my BMR. Basically, that tells me the number of calories I burn laying in bed all day. Then I use the Harris Benedict Equation to calculate my caloric needs based on daily activity.

There are BMR calculators online. I prefer ...

Once you determine the BMR you can link to another calculator that will answer your calorie questions. Hope that helps. Thanks - Traci

newbie starting Atkins!!
Hi Hannah - I would suggest that you pick up Dr. Atkin's book. This is a great resource that will provide you with both practical information and the science behind Atkins way of eating.

If that isn't possible, spend some time on the Atkin's website. The website will provide you with your net carb goals, acceptable food lists, as well as information on choosing the 'right' carbs.

Good Luck to you!
