following: The South Beach Diet
performance: losing 2.1 lb a week

My son is four and I am still trying to get rid of the AMAZING amount of weight I gained when I was pregnant. I have had success with the South Beach Diet in the past and then gained all of the weight back due to laziness. I am trying again, but with realistic goals and modifications. I do not eat lowfat dairy and I pretty much eat all of the nuts and beans I want to. I have a hectic life, so I don't sit at the table a lot.
I recommend everyone get a copy of the book "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. It helped me refocus my eating habits and convinced my husband that sugar and refined carbs are the problems. I am currently losing weight. I have good days and bad days, but I am hopeful. My goal weight is the heaviest that I can be as a "normal" weight on the BMI scale. I thought that was a reasonable first goal. I have not made it out of "obesity" yet. I think when I hit 158, I will only be "overweight". That will be for the first time in five years.

50 LB WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE - WELCOME
This week was a wash for me. At least I didn't gain. I have been getting ready to go on a trip, forgetting to eat, eating things I shouldn't, and visiting people.
I don't measure how much water I drink, but it is a lot. I live in Tucson, AZ and am constantly reminded to drink water. I'm not from here, so the dry air can really bother me at times. I don't drink soda, juice, or anything else. Just wine and water.
One year, when I was 22 or so, I would take an Aleve Cold and Sinus pill every morning before work. It was "for energy" with the added bonus that I had no appetite. It's a psedophedrine cold pill. I got really thin, but I was always angry or freaking out about something. Strange. I wouldn't recommend that route.

50 LB WLC - WEEK #3
I like your goals. Mine are:

1. I will not eat out of boredom or imagination. This means not eating after reading Gourmet, watching the food network, or talking to my foodie friend
2. I will not eat after dinner
3. I will eat more in the morning
4. I will also use the community here if I am having problems
5. I will actually exercise

I didn't realize I was an emotional eater. I used to literally always have a cigarette in my mouth, so it was easier for me to control how much I ate. I used to starve around a lot because I didn't want to end up fat like my older sister and mom.
This fall, my older sister was diagnosed with cancer, and I gained 10-15 lbs. I was already way too fat. I think I must have eaten my way through her diagnoses.
Last night, after reading the challenge, I asked my boyfriend if he thought I was an emotional eater. He didn't. I then thought that I felt like I eat when I am happy or around people. I have been much happier these past few years! I don't eat much during the day when I am with my son and then eat lots in the evenings when Josh is home from work. I have portion control problems. I eat fast. Then, I have the whole snacking on leftovers at night thing. I really need to work on this behavior. When I very first began to gain weight, it was with my friend who obsesses over food. We would eat out and talk about food all of the time. He has a blog of local restaurants now. I try to talk to him about anything but food, because he always makes me hungry.
I need to pay better attention to my behavior. By now, I know what I need to do. No excuses!

50 LB WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE - WELCOME
Not such a great week. I'm not going to beat myself up about it, though. It seems that I eat (or obsessively play packrat on facebook) when I am feeling bad about myself. Neither are considered diet or exercise. I have been having terrible stomach problems that I hope to resolve.
I am going to try to walk places this week. It will be a big challenge as I have the young son and live somewhere (the Sonoran Desert) where I get badly sunburned in the afternoons. I don't live on the bus line. If I don't make it walking for chores (it is also finals week, so I'm strapped for time), I will try to commit to walking for exercise. I"m interested in the "interval" walking program in the new South Beach Diet book. It's only 20 minutes a day.
My biggest barriers are my lack of time and money. I am definitely on a budget. SBD calls for a lot of relatively expensive ingredients. Carbs are cheap. I tried to help out the grocery bill by eating a lot of beans this week and it destroyed my stomach. Another is my lack of time to cook. I use evenings for schoolwork. It's definitely easier to eat frozen food. I think as I go into the summer, I will be better at the diet and get more time to work on it. I am trying to approach it as a learning process. I need to organize grocery shopping. As long as I am still generally losing weight, I think everything will be all right.

50 LB. WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE - Week #1 Thought du Jour
these are great! I am especially happy to know that nuts are good for killing cravings. I have also been using sugarfree gum. The brand orbits (orbitz) orbit? is all different kinds of mint. I have a flavor of Trident right now that is Pina Colada. It makes me feel nauseous. But, not hungry.

50 LB WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE - WELCOME
I am committed to dieting, but I don't have any sort of exercise schedule yet. Being realistic, (I have two weeks until finals and stay home with a 2 and a half year old boy) I am going to start with a goal of at least 30 minutes of walking a day. I can do that in the morning with my son, he has a trike that I can push. After I get out of school, I will have a more flexible schedule.
So, that is 210 minutes of cardio.

My older sister was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in October. This news has totally changed my life. I think I decided to get control over my body as a reaction to the fear and helplessness I was feeling about her illness. I have needed to diet for years. There was always some reason that I wasn't doing it, or some magical thing that was going to make me thin. Coming to the realization that mortality and the limits of the body are an actual thing has been slow, but I think I am getting there. This is my first dieting experience, I hope I don't blow it.
