i have to do all my working out at home, husband does not approve of gym
It's important enough to differentiate between the two Smile . If it's really about $$, there are plenty of things that you can do, either at home, or just out and about.

Walks or jogs outside.
Video workouts you can rent or buy.
Pick an cold-weather activity that you enjoy and add that in.
Heck, I've even gone to a local college that had a 5 story public building and walked up and down the stairs for an hour.

As long as you are creative, you can certainly find ways to workout that are free. I would suggest trying to get OUTSIDE the home and do a few exercises. If you are like many (including me), getting out of the house makes is MUCH easier to get motivated and not blow it off. Too many other things to do other then work out at home.

i see 20s 30s and 50s, what about 40s?
I'm 44 and have lost 30 lbs since the end of July (just shy of 3 months). I found that I gained weight very easily after 40, which is why I slowly creeped up about 35 lbs in the last 3-4 years. I'm not finding it that difficult to lose weight at all (so there is hope), but I must be more vigilant. In my early 30's, I lost about 55 lbs mostly through exercise and cutting back calories. I got to a pretty good level of fitness, but with that, I reverted to that early 20's mentality that I could "eat whatever I wanted", and I did.

The biggest thing at 40 I realized is that I have to take better care of my body and moderate my workouts. It took my body longer to heal and that meant less working out. Because, I never adjusted my portion control, the weight piled back on (quicker too).

This time around, I went on Nutrisystem (because my wife was having good success) and I find it VERY EASY to succeed on it, because, by it's very nature, it controls my portion sizes. I find the weight coming off pretty quick (averaging 2+ a week). I still have to be careful with my exercising to keep my body healthy, but it's not that bad. Instead of running 3 days in a row, I might do 1 run, 1 fast walk, then one run. I find that the biggest difference between losing in my 40's and losing in my 30's.

Bottom line, metabolism is slower (so there's less room for error) and there are certainly things you need to pay more attention to, but you can certainly lose weight just as steadily in your 40's as you can at other times.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to comment, without knowing specifically what the objection is. I'm a husband..... and go to the gym and whose wife goes to the gym too (sometimes together, mostly not). I can't for the life of me think what about the gym could be so off-putting to him.

It is in an unsafe part of town.... or is it a jealously thing. The gym is absolutely the best place to get focused workouts in, because you are there (or should be) for a specific purpose.

All that being said, there are plenty of ways get a good workout in a non-gym setting.

Nutrisystem did me BAD, now what do i do?
This is an interesting thread......

I'm actually on NS right now and have lost 30 lbs in 3 months. I'm abut 10 away from where I want to be, but I'll get there pretty quickly. My plan (I flex 2 days a week) cost $225 a/month plus what I have to buy in veggies, fruit and the other add on's. I spend about $350-$375 a month in food. Sounds like a lot, until I start calculating all those "food stops" and "lunches out" I used to take. By the time you add all that stuff in there, I'd say it's at least a wash, money wise. The food itself is palatable (some better then others), but the thing that I like the best on this diet is that it is EASY (which is critical for a busy person) and is not a starvation diet (I rarely feel deprived). I follow the plan 5 days a week religiously, then allow myself a few "extra" calories on my days off.

I have found the weight is falling off, and I only partially attribute that to the diet. I have also increased my exercise in that same time to 5-6 times a week. That is the true key to losing weight in my mind. I think that any diet that you can do that will restrict calories and that you can easily easily follow is fine, but unless you implement a physical aspect, your really going to limit your potential to lose.

One of the things that I find attractive about the NS is that it is prepackaged portions. I've always had a weakness in portion control. I wouldn't say my previous nutrition was poor as I ate decent food, just way too much of it. NS (like a lot of other diet's like it) is a pretty good way to go if you have "portion control" issues with food. I'll sacrifice a little taste, in order to not have to think "is this one or two servings" everytime I put something in my mouth.

But again, without exercise, the weight would not be coming off nearly as easily. So from a "weight loss" perspective, NS can be very effective coupled with a few other lifestyle changes.
