I'm a "young" 50 who has struggled most of my childhood and all of my adulthood with my weight. I joined FATSECRET on January 18, 2009. This site has been an incredible support. The tracking tools have been essential but quite frankly journaling has been key to losing the weight this time ... and managing to keep it off, give or take a few pounds of fluctuating. The support here from friends I have made has been wonderful!! I hesitate to use the word success because that implies 'arrival' and I truly believe this is a process, an ongoing journey, not a weight loss program, but a change in how I live my life with my body and with food.

I have probably weighed close to 300 lbs. in my adulthood. The highest weight I ever recorded was 277 lbs on March 4, 2004. This path has had many twists and turns and I have learned much in the process. I've been on MANY 'diets' ... I no longer 'diet' ... I now work on having a healthier relationship with food. There are no forbidden foods for me. However, there are foods that seem not to "agree" with me and are more difficult for me to eat in moderation.

I'm determined to be healthy and kind to myself ... that's why I'm here!!

I don't add buddies without bio's written. I like to have a sense of who folks are before I add them. Also, I have a hard time keeping up with everyone ... so please don't be offended if I disappear off your list ... if you haven't been around for a while I sometimes "clean house."

Definition of success
The problem lies in the definition of success and the definition of the "problem." There are many ways to lose weight. For me ... losing weight and keeping it off are only part of the definition of success. The more important part of success for me is in how I am living my life. Am I more content? Am I kinder to myself? Have I decreased my unrealistic expectations and negative self talk? Do I enjoy my food more? And ... how mindful am I of my life on a day to day basis. My "problems" in relation to being overweight have not simply been overeating or eating the "wrong" kinds of food. They encompass how I view myself, how I treat myself, and how I choose to deal with life's challenges in addition to self-destructive habits around poor choices, early learning and on and on and on. But everyone is at a different point in their own personal journeys and many think how I think is too psychological or just pure hogwash!!! Knowledge and skill in terms of eating is the "easy" part. Change in how we live is the more difficult.

Why are you overweight?
I really do not think the major reason people are overweight is due to lazyness. It is true that the solution is much simpler than most believe ... it is simply a matter of calories consumed vs. a calories expended which can be accomplished both by moving our bodies more and by eating less. Not meaning to 'stir the pot' here but I think while 'lazyness' may be a factor for some ... I certainly wouldn't count it in my list of 'reasons' why I have been overweight most of my adult life. The simple answer of course is I ate more than I needed to. The longer list includes more complex issues which include not feeling good about myself, a poor relationship with my father, a belief (long before I was overweight) that I was FAT because I was teased as 'fat' as a young child (happens I guess if you are the biggest (i.e. tallest) kid when you are little and we know how cruel kids can be at times, fear (of many things), poor nutrition growing up, just to name a few. None of these are 'excuses' ... just my journey. Change, even when it is a positive change, can be very difficult for people. Many stay in horrid relationships, jobs they detest, places they live, so on and so forth at least partly because they fear the unknown. When you have been overweight your whole life ... it is scary on some level (though few would probably admit it) to change. We all become comfortable with what we know ... even if we are miserable. My 2 cents for today!!

BMR Problem/Question
Basically I say ... pay attention to true hunger cues and eat accordingly and forget what everyone says about how much you "SHOULD" eat. I agree with Kate ... there isn't a formula that will work for every person. I think upping exercise is better than dropping calories. I also think mixing up caloric intake is helpful. Some people have a 'free' day but basically not eating exactly the same number of calories everyday seems to keep our motors running efficiently. Eating GOOD food helps too. I think the more whole foods, the 'cleaner' our food the better our body uses it. I am still working on that piece. I tend to go for easy ... Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine and the like!!! I'm trying to eat more whole foods and begin cooking again!! LOL!!! I've been 'maintaining' for months ... doesn't feel much different to me than 'losing' (and of course I still struggle with wondering if I "should" lose more even though my body appears quite content where it is!! LOL!!! Do we ever get it??) Take care Alli!!!

Of All Ridiculous Things....
The HCG 'diet' has been around actually for decades!! I think it has just floated to the surface again. I tried it decades ago. What works is eating less and exercising more. Simple math. While Sensa would have been tempting at an earlier phase of my life ... when I was searching for something 'magical' so I could eat whatever I wanted ... I think I prefer simply being mindful about what I eat and how I move my body!!! I hate to even think of all the money I've spent over the years looking for 'the answer.'!!! Probably could pay for all my dental work and numerous Mexican holidays!!

Controversial Topic: What Causes Obesity?
I fear I will always have a love affair with 'junk food' and some foods that are unbelievably calorie laden!!! I agree with Kate ... I just don't eat them all the time which makes them ever so scrumptious ... and also reminds me of why I don't eat them everyday!!
