The Rhetoric of Weight
Follow up on food costs: Eating healthy can be more expensive, ESPECIALLY if you shop at Whole Foods Market. That is one of the most expensive places I have seen period! I agree that the food industry has made it really cheap to eat poorly, but that is just an excuse. If you spend the time you can eat healthy and not break the bank. A bag of unprocessed natural rice can last for MONTHS. You can have chicken (white meat) at very inexpensive prices. Add spices to "spice things up". Yes, it is harder to eat well when you are watching the wallet, but that is still not an excuse for not searching for deals and researching good, cheap, healthy alternatives. Want cheap vegetables? Go to a farmers market. Cheap meat? Look for weekly deals or those on the shelves longer as they are usually discounted. Again, it involves working hard at finding inexpensive food and dealing with those inconveniences.

An individual should hopefully never have to be in such a feast/famine situations, but if it happens take care of yourself first. The cable bill can wait. Your heart can't. Don't skimp on your food. (not recommending irresponsible financial actions mind you Razz )

The Rhetoric of Weight
I think this is a pretty good thread so I will throw in my two cents. First of all, I have never been obese so "I don't know how it is to be 10,000 lbs", but I try to be an observer of life around me. The one thing that is consistent is inconsistency. Everybody is different. There are people that eat 1 million calories worth of little debbie snacks (read: empty calories) and look like twigs and others eat a piece of toast and gain 10lbs. Weight is a unique aspect to individuality and is different for everyone.

While there are always unique situation (thyroid, allergies, or even temporary mental distress) that can cause weight gain the "majority" of people will do fine eating better and exercising to lose weight. I don't think that self control is the issue though. I believe that there are two more important aspects to losing weight for EVERONE: will power and knowledge/information. Without will power, no diet or exercise plan will work and without knowledge, will power cannot be properly applied. It is the will power that if one “falls off the wagon”, one has the will power to “get back on” and try again; to make up for the missed exercise session tomorrow, to know that if you eat a cookie today you’ll have a salad for lunch tomorrow. Will power is recognizing “excuses” and moving past them. It is interesting how many people have excuses. Don’t blame others, parents, work, stress, etc. Recognize your weakness (whatever it may be) and fight through it. It IS hard work.

Knowledge is just as important these days as the food industries love to peddle junk food as “good stuff”. You can exercise all you want, but if you eat McDonald’s everyday you are done for. It is important to know what you are eating and how healthy it is. Stay away from processed sugar (high fructose corn syrup), crazy amounts of carbs (sorry pizza), or empty calories (just about EVERY soda). It is a chore, inconvenient, and sometimes costly to look at labels and choose which items to eat and which to avoid, but that ties in with the will power. Again, that is not saying one cannot indulge and treat oneself every once in a while, but recognizing it is a treat and the will power to continue working hard. Losing weight is NOT easy, but I do believe most everyone can attain it. Before everyone gets their panties in a wad, those with actual medical conditions are excused, but unless you actually have a “doctor’s note” don’t be assuming it is your genetics and assume you’ll always just be “big boned”. Will power and knowledge are POWERFUL things.

Bottomline: if you want to lose weight you have to read and research what you should and should not eat and have to mentally commit to it and have the will power to actually do it. And do it for the rest of your life! Otherwise it just “comes back”.

Personal note: I am on fatsecret because I am trying to get into the best shape of my life and I am keeping track of calories and food intake to help achieve that goal.
