following: fatoldlady's own diet
performance: losing 0.9 lb a week

I am a 54 year old woman who has to lose about 150 pounds. The pain from the arthrits in my knees finally forced me to get serious about it. Now I am calorie counting and trying to find some form of exercise I enjoy.

My work has had me travelling most of my adult life so I never had any children or got married. My two dogs are like my kids. One is a six year old Great Pryeness Chow mix. He is sweet and gentle and looks like a lion. The other is a year old Chow and I think coyote mix. She is a bundle of energy and sometimes a bit trying but makes me laugh on a daily basis. They brighten up my life and get me out of the house and moving when I am down.

I love to garden and found I have a talent for growing things. My friends say my house looks like a tropical jungle. Last year my knees were so bad that my outdoor garden was overgrown with weeds. I am hoping that things will be better this spring so I can get things cleaned up and looking good.

I have bought my retirement place, two acres in the mountains of BC, and hope to retire soon or at least semi retire. I keep thinking of all the things I could grow on two acres with a good climate. Right now I live in a small town about 40km outside of Calgary AB. Gardening in Alberta is very challanging. Very cold in the winter, hot and dry in the summer and the weather can change by 30C in a matter of hours.

The rational and scientific weight loss discussion thread
Spacey47 wrote:
I really have no idea what you are on about, or why you feel the need to say you personally don't need to be babied or what you eat ....

This thread was ticking along very nicely people exchanging good ideas n'all till you poured a little scorn on proceedings

Maybe just leave it at that

It is very annoying when someone comes into a good discussion and tries to push their ideas that are totally contrary to the thread. Hmmm...where have I seen that before. Ohh I remember, its most of your posts Spacey. Whenever anyone starts a discussion that doesn't agree with your view you push your way in there in a rude, condescending manner. Yet when someone expresses an opinion that you don't agree with in your post you are offended. If you want people to respect your rules, you have to show some respect for them.

Need Lots of Help
I think that fear can be a great motivator. My knees got so bad that I could barely do the bare minimum to take care of myself. My doctor, and rightly so, refused to even recommend me to a surgeon for knee replacement until I lost a lot of weight. Surgery is more dangerous when you are overweight and the knee replacement would wear out faster with all that extra weight. I knew that as my mobility decreased I would get more and more depressed and eat more and end up one of those sad people that they have to cut them out of their home.

You should view sugar and refined carbs as poison. Is that treat worth losing your vision or a limb? I agree with all of the above posts, this has to come from you. This site is good for finding strategies to help you and support through the rough times but ultimately its up to you.

Hello
I have the double whammy of having Hashimoto disease and getting older. I don't think there is a specific diet that help with an underactive thyroid. I find most doctors try to keep you on a very low dosage of thyroid medication which keeps your metabolism slow and I agree with mrspackrat, the medication doesn't work the same what your body produces. The only way I found to lose weight is to lower my calories or up my exercise. You might have to eat less or exercise more than someone who doesn't have this problem. It is possible just harder....as if losing weight wasn't hard enough already.

"Fat-shaming may curb obesity" ???
However, Not Everybody Has it as Easy as Everybody Else

The research, however, is very clear: not everybody has it as easy as some folks do. Some people’s bodies are, in fact, demonstrably more resistant to weight loss (or gain) than others. Not that they can’t lose (or gain) weight but it comes off or on more slowly. More accurately, their bodies fight back harder.

Researchers call these folks Diet Resistant and the reasons behind this resistance is just starting to be determined. It probably has to do with how these individuals brains perceive changes in caloric intake which determines how their brains react to those changes. Some people’s bodies simply increase metabolic rate more quickly (or drop it more quickly) in response to increased or decreased calories. You can see similar variations in terms of what’s lost during dieting; given the same diet and exercise program, some people will lose a lot more muscle than another.

And we all have that one friend who eats nothing but ice cream and soda and never gains a pound. Of course, when you look closely, you find that the person really isn’t eating as much as it looks like overall, or they are only eating that one big meal per day that you happened to see, or they are burning it off because they are constantly moving (in essence, they fidget the excess calories off), or they compensate the next day after eating a lot and eat very little so that overall they maintain their weight.

These people’s brains sense the caloric excess more readily and either blunt hunger harder and faster, or get the person to move more, to burn it off. The same thing happens in reverse, some people’s metabolic rates slow down faster when calories are restricted, or makes them move around less during the day so they burn fewer calories, making further fat loss a lot harder. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about this by reading the article Metabolic Rate Overview.

The above is right out of the link posted by Bglrn. How is this not a difference in metabolism?
