37 years old, married to the most wonderful woman in the world. My wife lost 70 lbs four years ago and has kept it off. My brother lost over 200 lbs five years ago and kept it off. It was my turn.
I was 280 lbs at my heaviest and started developing a blood clot in my right leg. Doc said I should really watch what I ate. So I did. No exercise, just limited the pizza, burgers, and everything I loved that was doing me harm. Started eating fat-free and low-fat foods. After a couple of weeks, I noticed I lost over 10 lbs. Just by switching what I ate. Adding exercise (walking, weight training, walking stairs, then jogging and bicycling) I was able to keep shedding the pounds.
No gimmicks. No pills. No stupid fees to some weight loss center or dues to a gym. Just plain ole diet and exercise. I decided to do it and I did. I really didn't want to go under 230 lbs at first, but I was enjoying the way my wife was looking at me. So I went to 200. Then I found I could wear jeans that I hadn't been able to in over 13 years.
So now I've decided to just go all the way and do something I've never done before and cut my bodyfat down and bulk up the muscle. Ultimately, I want to stay wearing my size 31 jeans. I'll put on as much muscle as my jeans will allow and then stay that way.
I lost over 100 lbs in 9 months.
UPDATE 2015: It's been almost years and I have still kept it off. I am now regularly weight lifting to "fill in" what loose skin I have left with muscle tone. Anyone can accomplish anything they set their mind to.
You just have to belief in yourself, even when it seems impossible, keep believing.
