Hey, I am 30 and am a huge geek. I have been heavy set since I was 11 and never really cared about doing anything about it. Lately though I have been feeling the effects of my weight (sucks to get older) and decided it was time to get healthy. I have made lots of small changes in that effect but decided it was time to get serious so here I am!

This is more about health than obesity. In this day and age we have celiac disease, type-2 diabetes which used to be considered an adult only disease now affecting kids in grade school, soaring food allergies, increased cases of multiple sclerosis, ADD & ADHD, Heart Disease, cancer, etc. These diseases are affecting younger and younger people why?

This is why I find traditional diets so alluring because it goes back to a day and age not that long ago where these diseases of 'civilization' we're practically unheard of.

Paula Dean was recently diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes and they blamed butter. Humanity has been eating gobs of butter for thousands of years but we all nod our heads in agreement condemning the butter as we chow down on our 'buttery' vegetable spread which was never in our diet until probably 30 years ago, if that.

As a history major I felt I should weigh in on the subject of diseases. Just because they didn't call it Type-2 diabetes doesn't mean it didn't exist. It just means they didn't have a name for it. Any disease dealing with the lungs was called consumption. And if someone died unexpectedly at 25 they didn't do an autopsy or take x-rays. Who's to say he didn't have cancer.

As science progressed we were able to discover issues within the human body and give them names. We realized that the lumps that developed in the human body were mutated cells and called it cancer. With more people today, you will naturally see an increase in the number of cases.

Sorry about this. It's really not that important but I dislike it when people think that just because we have fancy names for things means it only started happening within the last 50 years. When it reality they have been happening throughout history they just couldn't explain or understand it.

We're told to eat less and exercise more, that advice has failed miserably...

A year ago when I got serious about weight loss all I did was eat less and started to exercise. My diet didn't change, I still eat the same things I did two years ago. I think the 65lbs I've lost speak louder then your post.

What to snack on when reading a book or watching a movie?
It may not be the healthiest option but I find that hard candy (if your craving sweet) works really well on the cravings. It's actually very low in calories and you get the satisfaction of something in your mouth. One piece can last quite a while and your jaw doesn't hurt at the end like gum.

entering info in the food diary
There are three ways you can enter food on this site.

1) Say you purchase some butter that is different then what you found on this site, you can enter that using the info on the package to this site. I've added many purchased foods this way and it helps to expand their database of foods. (I added No Name petite cut steaks last night)

2) You can have a saved meal that has a few ingredient's. It will add everything to your food diary. I do this with my egg sandwiches. It's nice as you can then tweak the ingredient's to fit that morning (sometimes I use a full piece of cheese sometimes a half.)

3) You can enter a recipe. I did this with a couple of things. You can share or not and it put's everything into one nice entry. Problem is you can't tweak the ingredient's except in the recipe.

Frustrated with Induction Results
I have to agree with greerp. If you're diet calendar is correct you are eating way below what your body needs. A normal, non active, woman should not eat below 1200 calories (if you work out you need to add that into the number). If you go below that your body goes into starvation mode and starts hording your fat
