-vegetarian
-struggles to eat healthy in the States but never in Europe
-loves fencing, spinning, kickboxing, pilates, yoga, dancing, volleyball, hula hooping, and trying to start running regularly
-dreads the massive quantities of cereal in the dining halls and loathes the lack of lentil soup, berries, and cabbage

I'm not really overweight...but with my height (6') I always feel super masculine. Looking to shed some pounds (mostly just slim down, tone up, lose the nastiness that is my stomach) and get into shape enough that I will want to actually continue to exercise. As much as I enjoy working out, I also enjoy being super lazy.

Hi, everybody!
Hey Kiara! I'm also in college, going for med school and living off dining hall food!
I'm not sure how your dining halls are set up or how many choices there are, but here are a few things that I've been using to get back into shape (I actually lost weight my first two quarters, then had a rocky month that led to me gaining a bit. rawr.):
1. If you're anything like me, you walk into the dining hall, see a ton of different options for a meal, and end up taking a bunch of different things. DON'T! If possible, try and quickly plan out a "normal" meal, with one entre. Use as few dishes as possible. When you're at home, you typically just have a plate and maybe a bowl for salad or soup. Just because you're at college and you can eat however much you want doesn't mean you should pile up with five bowls and three plates!
2. Dining hall meal selections aren't that huge with variety. If you can't decide between pizza or pasta or stir fry or whatever, just tell yourself that the same offerings will probably be available the next day or in a few days. It isn't necessary to get all in one meal!
3. Start with a salad, if possible. I'm a vegetarian, but one of my friends likes to get salads then pick up a piece of grilled chicken and slice it up for his salad. That way, it doesn't seem as boring.
4. Try to keep the pastry and dessert foods to a minimum. Again, they're always there, so try and look at that section as a treat that you can have once a week or so if you have been good!

Fitness is tough when you're constantly trying to study, but if it's important to you, you can make time! Try to look over your schedule and see if there are any spots that you are not really using to it's best potential. Our full gym is inconveniently far from my dorm, but there's a room of cardio machine is the dorm next to me. All it takes is 20 minutes a day to get you going! Some college gyms have fitness classes; these can be really nice because they are typically fun and there's a variety of classes to fit into your schedule. If none of this works for you, maybe just try to get some extra walking in between classes or speed walk. If you have enough room in your dorm, take quick study breaks to do some crunches, pushups, jumping jacks, etc. Squeeze in some exercise and get the blood flowing to get yourself focused on studying again!

Hulu.com has an exercise channel that has videos ranging in length. Try them out if you can.

Good luck, and let me know if you need anything else! Very Happy

I was just wondering... how many calories does a person burn in a day if they do nothing.
It depends on your BMR too. Athletes burn more calories when they are at rest because their metabolisms are typically higher and they have more muscle. And then there's those naturally thin people that can eat however much they want, not exercise at all, and not gain a pound. Obviously, they are using naturally burning more calories.
Just a thought. Factoring in the number of calories you burn by doing nothing probably isn't going to help you get healthier.
Best of luck! :]
