I'm a mother of two trying to learn to balance my life of children, marriage and work, and squeezing in some time for me somewhere (or I will someday, I keep promising myself). In the world of social work and being a parent, my schedule rarely goes according to planned and the needs of others are always at the forefront--and time-critical. I don't want to fall victim, as so many moms and social workers do, of sacrificing my physical, mental and spritual health because I'm more concerned with immediate issues than making healthy long-term choices. I'm trying to build habits of physical fitness and healthy living that are a model for my clients and my children...and are good for me, too. I'm less concerned about weight loss than healthy living, but I do recognize weight loss as a useful (though not sufficient) tool to measure progress. I'm hoping to build lifestyle habits that reflect healthy living, not trying to crash diet to reach a magic number.

New to this website
Don't give up! The website can definitely be a little overwhelming, because it seems like there's a lot going on. I found it most useful to start every day clicking on the "My fatsecret" tab at the top. On the right hand side of that screen are "enter food/exercise", and "weigh-in" and "my challenges." If you focus on the items in that little coloumn, always coming back to your homescreen by clicking on "My Fatscret", you might find it easier to navigate your way around. It's worked for me, at least. Otherwise I can get lost in the ads and thousands of comments by strangers. Weight loss and healthy living is a journey and a lifestyle, not a quick thing, and definitely never easy. Hang in there, and feel free to send a message or reply if you need anything! (The "send message" button to the right of my post will send me a private message)

need a workout buddy for phoenix az
I work near Indian School and Central in Phoenix from 8-4:30pm. If you're around there maybe we could take a lunch break and go walking? I just have to leave by 4:30pm everyday to go get my girls.

Who wears biker shorts under dresses? (can we talk about chaffing?)
Monistat makes an anti-chafing "poweder gel" in the States for about $10, but it lasts for months. It's almost scent-free and clear, and lasts all day, unless you're really sweaty. Otherwise, I've been all about the bike shorts (usually in grey, black or nude) since the first time I went to Europe and I was walking 10 miles/day. The Spanx are great too, but I found they can be a bigger pain to get off/on all day, and felt a little more like "granny panties" than just workout shorts. My general plan is: tummy control, use Spanx; most days, use the chafing gel, or workout shorts. If I plan on getting frisky with my husband, definitely the gel or the workout shorts!

How to stay full throughout the day
I'm a big fan of apples, grape tomatoes, or carrots if I just want to be munching...40-80 calories can be squeezed in without a problem. If I need some protein, a string cheese stick can complement any of those. If I really want something sweet, I go gor ghiradelli 60% dark chocolate chips. One serving, 80 calories. With a cup of coffee, it's a perfect 'dessert.'
