I am a 60 year old fat guy with Diabetes. I never gave much care or attention to my Diabetes over the years (15) and of course it has manifested into Periphial Neuropathy. I have been on approximate 5 or 6 diets throughout my life so you know I have been struggling with my weight my entire life (born 12 pounds 14 ounces) and its been an uphill struggle ever since. At age 18 I joined Weight Watchers and lost 67 pounds. At age 25 I was in on the liquid protein fad and lost 130 pounds in 4 months. At age 36 I jumped on Dr. Atkins and kindley gave up 90 pounds in about 8 months. At age 48 weighing in at my heaviest 386 pounds I woke up one morning and decided to quit eating and quit smoking (3 pack a day habit) and start walking. I lost 161 pounds over the course of 2 years but not without sacrifice. At the 108 pound loss level I found some blockage around my heart and went in for a Triple bypass (Nov 7, 2002) but continued on with my walking routine (5 miles daily) and I joined a gym to help me lose the additional 53 pounds and shape up what I had left hanging all over me. I was able to maintain my 225 body up until 2007 when again I went to hell in a handbasket and I balloned back up to 300 pounds. I started walking again (this time not so easy) and I lost 35 pounds but noticed my legs, calves and feet were not such willing participants. I went back to my old eating habits and here I am today with Diabetic Periphial Neuropathy and I can barely stand on my feet let alone walk on them but I am once again trying through diet and exercise to drop 100 pounds and get back to my fighting weight of 225 pounds. I know at 60 it is going to be tough and finding the magic plan is always a chore but I figure if I want to be around another 5 or 10 years I have got to do something. I have been clean eating for a month now but I am showing very little results in the weight loss department. I am however getting my Blood Sugar levels under control and I guess at the end o

If you could buy one workout machine- what?
Bowflex! If it doesn't work out Ebay is selling them used for more then they cost new if you need to get rid of it instead of using it for an expensive coat hanger.

What would you tell your 16 year old self?
Stay in school, get a profession, get to the gym and walk for your life you will live long and prosper and with a little luck you will still have your health when you retire...and you should have said yes to the invitation when you were 14...hindsight is 20/20!

Is Obesity a Disease? NPR
We need to stop buying crap from our local and National Grocers and maybe the message will get back to the suppliers. I was just reading an article on Grains regardless if they are whole grains or enriched they do us absolutely no good yet they take up almost 25% of the space at your regular Market. When we know something is not good for us we have to take the initiative to not buy or consume the stuff. I do believe a portion of our obesity issues are genetic as my Mom and Dad we a couple of fatty's and they had 7 kids and we are all fat as well. I believe we have the gene and the way it gets active is we learn to eat based on our environment (learned behaviour). I married a woman with 4 kids of which the youngest was 2. She sat alongside of me her entire life and learned the same bad habits from me I picked up from my parents. She is now right along side of me having to learn to lose weight and relearn how we should eat. Thnkfully the other 3 had some age on them and they were not prone to my poor eating habits of mine. I would say 25% is genetic and 75% we do to ourselves. The biggest challenge anyone has is re-learning how to eat properly and realize it is a total lifestyle change and not just a diet! Anyone that thinks they are just on a diet is doomed to fail! I know I am 60 years young and the DIETs I have been on in my lifetime I have lost at least 3 people maybe 4!
