2015: I am a type 2 Diabetic and trying to follow a vegetarian low-fat diet, I have been more successful when I can focus on a whole food plant-based diet, after 6 months my a1c was 6.1 (for those who care) that is good control, my ultimate goal is to get my weight and BMI where it should be, right now my BMI is 26 and hoping by tracking total calories I'll be successful in getting where I need to my optimum weight. Update: In May 2020 after a stress test and angiogram I was told I had 3 blockages at 30 percent, I had completely given up on my plant-based eating for a more traditional diet and while I still ate healthily, my blood work was not as good and my weight had gone to 227. I enrolled in the Cleveland Clinic Heart Disease reversal program and began a plant-based vegan diet with no oil no nuts no Avacado no dairy no meat no fish, I have been 99% compliant and have lost 30lbs IN 5 MONTHS, my a1c dropped to 5.6 my cholesterol dropped to 139 good cholesterol 46 bad 40 and I feel great. My BMI is where it is supposed to be while the may seem like an extreme approach at age 65 I felt I needed to change my lifestyle and eat to live not live to eat. Anyone looking to follow a heart disease reversal diet and willing to make this commitment, I can give testimony that it gets results quickly, while I do plan to add fat-free dairy and egg whites in the future I a m going to maintain my fat content in 10 - 12 percent of total calories. I still enjoy wine and carbs and the diet get easier the longer you are on it.
