18 November 2008

I recently went to a cooking class that had a focus on yummy, easy, impressive, and HEALTHY meals for the holidays. My personal faves were the Turkey Asparagus Appetizers, Gingerbread Cake, Raspberry Balsamic Chicken, and Cauliflower "Mashed" Potatoes.

I'm looking forward to bringing several of these to Thanksgiving at my parents' house. Whereas I can easily tell my mom that her ideas for veggie side dishes are for chumps, my culinary contributions are not as welcome at my husband's family's house, so maybe I will just bring the cake to have a "safe" dessert.

By the way, lest you all think I'm slandering a perfectly nice mother in law ... contributions aren't expected/welcomed because she is Martha Stewart/Oprah/Rachel Ray with a dash of Emily Post mixed in for good measure. She is the consummate entertainer and now that her three sons have moved out of the house, she a ton of free time to devote to cooking. Moreover, she has three sons, the oldest is my just turned 30 husband. So, we are lumped in with his cousins and brothers at the "kids table" and aren't expected to make any sort of adult contribution to celebrations. Can be a double edged sword though.

Unfortunately, her cooking style is of the hearty, oily, fatty, (tasty) school. Think suburban high school home-ec classes from the early 60s. When special accommodations were made a while back for me, she grilled some shrimp along with the hot dogs and hamburgers. Nice, right? Marinated in roughly three gallons of full-fat salad dressing. I had to eat them to be gracious, of course, but had the frustrating feeling of having to eat in an unhealthy manner because the menu is out of control.

I have no idea what she'll serve for her Thanksgiving, and successfully pissed off my husband by asking him. (He's very sensitive to any perceived slight against his family, and really, he's just as loyal to me.) I'll have to eat tiny portions of delicious food and show great restraint in the face of an open bag of Fritos. Not my wheelhouse.

On the plus side, his mom is having a photographer take a family picture of all of his side of the family. I'm going to take one with just me and my husband (and the dogs!) to replace our wedding pic on the mantle, where all you can see is my chins and flappy arms.

Oh, and for those of you keeping track, I'm blue! As in, that weight tracker dealie is blue, but I'm by no means sad.
