I am trying to lose weight and stay under 200lbs. I went to a wopping 223 pounds in December 2011, started a custom diet in January 2012 and have lost about 25lbs since then by trying to keep carbs to a minimum, eating more protein and fiber, and favor fats over carbs. Carbs require insulin, insulin stops fat oxidization, if you reduce carbs to a minimum you will burn more fat.

I hate following structured diets like those that prescribe what 20 veggies I can eat, and what things I can't eat at all. What a pain!

I just watch what I eat and I try to eat the most fiber and protein (at least 75-100g/day), healthy fats (under 50g/day), and under 50g of carbs per day. If I get stuck I increase exercise and reduce carbs even more. I also cheat if I feel diet pain, at least once a week. I'm happy not forcing myself to do anything painful.

June 2012 Update: Now I'm 182lbs and I've changed my diet a little so I don't keep losing weight. Trying to remain between 180 and 185lbs.

Dukan too high in Carbs?
Carbs require insulin, insulin stops lipolysis. Carbs from fruit, veggies and whole grains are better but in excess they will stop fat oxidization. My priority in nutrients start with fiber as the best, then protein, followed by fat, and the last/worst is carbs. Fat doesn't make you fat, carbs do, bc carbs stop fat oxidization.

That's why the most successfull diets include low carb combinations, increasing your metabolism, and burning more calories than you eat per day. I've been consistently losing weight since I started this in January without paying for any diet advice, Google is my friend.

I'm still playing with lower carbs and more exercise to lose the last few pounds I need to lose. After that I will continue to eat the same nutrient breakdown, and always keep carbs as low as possible.

I need some help with this and I don't really have anywhere else to turn!
Keep in mind that as males we're missing a piece of a chromosome, and I'm thinking part of that makes us stupidly sarcastic, less emotional, we don't usually think before we say things and come off as jerks a lot more than we want to. Regardless of the reason why he said that, and it could be a combination of what everyone is proposing, you should know you're doing great and you should not punish yourself for his stupidity. I believe your best bet is to actually ask in a way that won't hurt you why is that he say something like that, and see what he says. Trust me we men need some help most times to understand why things we say can have a very hurtful impact on others, even when think something we say is funny. Try explaining to him that he hurt you by saying that, and that it made you less motivated. If he still doesn't care then teach him a lesson to see if he is willing to learn to be less of a jerk. By talking a little more you can decide if he's a keeper or not, because just being upset without digging into his brain and feelings is going to hurt more in the end.
