Thermodynamics? Not really...
I've lost 12 lbs on Atkins - eating an average of 800 to a 1000 more calories than I was previously eating. Just because a scientific theory has a big following and the appearance of airtight logic, doesn't make it accurate. Just ask Galileo.

Thanks smcred and messamermom! This site has been helpful in tracking carbs for specific foods. For example I had a hemp protein powder I put in an different container and had lost track of the carbs. I found Atkins.com helpful. But I just got Dr. Atkins books out of the library, and I'd have to say that the website seems to have much, much less information than the books, to the extent that it almost feels misleading. I think I'm on the right track now.

Hey - brand new here. This is a wonderful site. The diet calendar is awesome. I'm three weeks into Atkins and had been eyeballing my calories, protein and fat counts and not losing anything after an initial drop of 7 lbs. Actually started adding weight back. In one day I found out that I was way too high on calories. The calorie content of fat was nowhere on my radar screen.
