2020 Update. 8 years on since I first signed up and I'm over a stone heavier (mostly gained in the last 6 months). Time to do something about it. I'll be intermittant fasting 2 days a week (800 cals) with 1200-2500 calorie allowance on the other days. My weekly calorie target is 12,000 which is in line with my daily average allowance of 1,700. My initial target weight is 170 lbs by 17th Sept and currently my final target is to get to 164lbs and see how I feel.

My entry from 2012 "I'm now in my early 50's and the weight has been slowly creeping since my 30's. I'm determined to get back to where I was 10 years ago, but gradually and without too much angst.

I'm currently trying the 5:2 Intermittent Fasting program and hoping to lose 2lbs a month until my birthday next March.

I've dieted, and then gained again, all my adult live and I know the calorie count of just about every food imaginable, so another of my aims is to listen to my body, stop worrying so much about food, and enjoy it a whole lot more."

Starting Again
Hi. I've used IF and 5:2 several times over the last 6 years and had a fair amount of sucess but I have found that IF of any kind (including a 16:8 fast/eating period which is what it sounds like you're using?) works less well each time I try it. I'm not sure whether that's because the body gets used to the regieme and doesn't drop fat as easily when it becomes adapted or whether I've gradually "slipped" and been less strict with myself on fasting days and allowed myself more food on non-fasting days each time around. I have read that IF isn't quite as effective for women as it is for men as our bodies have a more efficient inbuilt ability to preserve fat, but I'm not sure if there's any actual scientific background to this theory. Anyway I'm giving 5:2 another go but tracking properly this time. Maybe for those of us inclined to put on weight fairly easily IF of any kinds needs us to track carefully during the eating periods too. At least I think that's how it works for me. Good luck. At the end of the day it's all about the calorie in/calorie out balance -I'm now counting mine on a weekly, rather than daily, basis to see how that works out.
