My period was COMPLETELY out of whack. I wouldn't get it for months and then when I did it was so heavy I was changing every hour. I would get so anemic that I had heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Once my medication kicked in it was more regular but still pretty heavy. In hopes of getting some relief my Dr. has talked me into the Mirena IUD, I haven't had a period yet but I am praying it works.

I was diagnosed years ago with PCOS. I wonder now if it really was PCOS or if it had more to do with my thyroid as I had all these issues you are talking about like missed periods, ones that lasted a month or more and even cysts on my ovaries that had to be surgically removed.

Perhaps it was a combination but I had problems with this from the time I first got my period at age 13 all the way until I was about 38! Then suddenly I got my periods spot on every 28 days for a couple of years. Now I am perimenopausal and finding they are a little less ordered but still monthly varying from 20 to 38 days depending on the month with most being 28...

I was diagnosed with PCOS last week but have had hypothyroid for 4 1/2 years. I'm not taking a birth control because the Yaz made me get gallbladder disease but it was recommended to prevent endometrial cancer. Without a period, your lining will get thick and could cause problems. That's why the periods are so heavy when you do get it

I too have thie the same problems. I can't really leave the house when I start. I thought about asking about having a hysterectomy. I had my tubes tied, cut burned(LOL) so not much use for it anymore. I take a rather large dose of synthroid, (.225mcg.) My thyroid is completly useless according to my doctor. Weight loss is a great challende for me. But...I have managed to lose 28 pounds since February.

I no longer have periods but wanted to see if my problems pre-hysterectomy were shared by other members. At the time my doctor said that my extremely heavy bleeding, painful cramps & anemia were caused by fibroid tumors. I did have a lot & big ones. One was actually wrapped around my bladder & they had to call in a specialist to snip them off. 11 years ago I was put on Levothyroxine because (as my doctor put it) my thyroid had gone on vacation & not taken me with it! Non-active thyroid. My thyroid problems are under control now, with the medication. I had my hysterectomy in 1993 so I am wondering if my inactive thyroid had a lot to do with my problems.

I have PCOS, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Insulin Resistance and also Fibroid tumors so needless to say my periods are not normal. I usually do not have one at all but sometimes I get a lot of abnormal spotting. In april, I thought maybe I was going to start having regular menses because I kind of started April 1 but it was only for half a day, then nothing for half a day, then 8 more hours of light bleeding. I did the same thing 28 days later. However, to my disappointment, nothing happened in May. I had my first ob/gyn appt in a very long time a week ago and she is going to put me on progesterone every month to make me have a period. I am nervous about it because last time they did that, I had one for 11 days and it was brutal due to the fibroids (very very painful - I could hardly do anything). She says it will start off that way but they will ease down as I start having one every month - apparently it builds up. It's hard telling what has made mine abnormal it could be any of the things. All I know is I had my first period a week or so after I turned 12 years old and they have never been normal since.

diagnosed little over a yr. ago. Periods are a mess, literally. So heavy I have to wear the heaviest tampon they make and back it up with an overnight pad and change every two hours. Periods come like clockwork, but last 8 to 10 days, stop for a few days, then I'll spot. Been checked for fibroids twice, nothing thank goodness. I can deal with spotting and heavy periods, but what really kills me is my hair falling out.

I am so glad to hear that others are having this same problem...well, not glad others are having a bad time..but, glad to know im not alone! I was starting to think it was just one of those things that change as we get older. When I got diagnosed with hashimotos...was at the same time, my periods got out of control. Cramps that last for 3-4 days straight, that bring me to my knees and in tears sometimes. Ive even crawled into my doctors office practically begging for something to relieve the pain. i have had ovarian cysts all of a sudden too. I have never dealt with cramps, pms or anything up until my thyroid went out of whack and hashimotos exploded. And, even 2 weeks before my period, i become some evil monster and i cant control the mood swings...its nuts! i even scare myself sometimes! hahahahahaaa
Maybe i should ask my doctor about this PCOS stuff and what not? I have never heard of all this other stuff that people are posting here. This is interesting!

I don't even get periods anymore because of my thyroid (hashi's). It's been at least 2 years now and I'm only 30! I do kinda miss them because they were telling me that my body was working well. I don't think I could get pregnant if we tried. My heart goes out to those who are bleeding heavily and/or painfully, though. That's miserable. Sad

I have been almost constantly on a period during 2011, with maybe one week off in total. I have hashimoto's and usually have underactive thyroid, starting to think it might have gone overactive since around Xmas time though as I have lost a bit of weight and have manic symptoms. I know it sounds bad but I don't want to go to my doctor because I'm worried she will take me off levothyroxine and then I'll definitely go underactive again and pile more weight on :S

jackisback, it is possible to go from hypo to hyper, I think it's caused by an inflammation of the thyroid (thyroiditis), and those manic symptoms can be really hard on your body. you really should see your dr about that and your neverending period. not going could do you more harm than good.

i have been trying to get pregnant and i am late by 4 days...but I have gained 10-12 lbs since march, pregnancy tests are negative so I'm wondering if my period is off because my thyroid is off and my meds need to be adjusted?
