JulieVK's own diet

 Summary:

My diet is not an everyday, anyone-can-do diet. It's guided and monitored by healthcare professionals, but can easily be modified to add protein (legumes, soy) for vegetarian or vegan diets. It is strictly for medical purposes, monitored closely by a dietitian, and supplemented with prescribed protein drinks by my doctor. I lack and enzyme in my liver that breakdown certain amino acids, which causes them to build-up in my body.

How To Follow JulieVK's own diet:

I would suggest contacting a healthcare professional before starting a vegan or vegetarian diet to make sure you are getting the proper amounts of protein. If not, it will be pulled from your muscles, and if that is done long enough, you'll have a whole new set of problems.

JulieVK's top tips

1.I'm not a "water drinker", so I carry a little bottle of the zero calorie flavoring in my purse for work and restaurants!
2.Due to my metabolic disorder (born with), I've returned to a low protein diet of fruits, veggies and limited starches.
3.Cut out ALL carbonated beverages! Substitute with unsweetened iced tea or water.
4.Put workouts on my daily planner so at least 30 minutes is worked into my schedule daily.
5.Join a gym and USE it!
6.Exercise more, exercise more, exercise more! Try to find an exercise buddy to workout and go to the gym with. (This is harder for me than it sounds!)

About / History

I've been on and off this diet throughout my life, but recently was showing symptoms from being off the diet too long, so I returned and plan to stay on for life. I tried the diet initially without the protein prescription. I wasn't getting enough protein, and it was being pulled from my body tissue to compensate.
