Low GI Diet Clinic

Stages: All| Phase 1| Phase 2

 Summary:

Low glycemic index diet. Choose green light foods & eat small portions of starches & grains. Phase 1 of the diet is more restrictive & should be followed for as long as weight loss is desired. The maintainance (Phase 2) opens up larger portions of starches & grain, 7 servings of alcohol a week & encourages occasional yellow light indulgences. Expect to lose 1-2#/week depending on how much weight you need to lose. Weight & inches loss may be more rapid in the beginning. Expect the possibility of a plataeu & slower weight loss the closer to your goal you get.

Jacqi130's top tips

1.Purchase Rick Gallop's The GI Diet Clinic book. It's got great info, easy-to-follow lists & interesting facts from participants of his 13-week e-clinic. A fast read!
2.Drink 8-10 servings of water a day. So helpful! Water is necessary for all the bodies functions, aids in digestion & keep your skin looking young!
3.Get 6-8 hours of sleep or more if you need it a night. You need to be well rested to lose weight & have energy.
4.Limit alcohol to one glass of red wine a night when possible if you so choose.
5.Savor a square of dark chocolate or two once a day or some other yellow or red light reward from time to time. Try to choose something that has some nutritional value, but you typically avoid like dark chocolate or red wine.
6.If you start gaining weight, simply revert back to some Phase 1 habits for a few weeks. The weight should slowly come back off. You can also simply keep your starch & grain portions low if you find that you're having a hard time maintaining.

About / History

Eating by way of the glycemic index or glycemic load is not new, but certainly not as well known or widely practiced most calorie-counting diets. I recommend Rick Gallop's books, but specifically The GI Diet Clinic (a 13-week plan...) which follows participants of his e-clinic as they put his diet theories to the test. (All participants were overweight-obese at the beginning of the program. Average weight loss in this category was 25 pounds in 13 weeks. Gallop warns the expectation for most dieters should be about 1#/week.)
