To all who are signing up for the challenge, welcome. This challenge is designed to get people out and moving at a gradual pace. There are three cycling plans
beginners, intermediate, and advanced. The goals are 25, 35, or 50 miles per week averaging 7,13, or 17 miles per hour by September 17, 2012.
Cycling is a great non-impact weight loss exercise as it exercises your biggest muscle group, has tremendous benefits for your heart, and is great for those who can't or hate jogging. I do not expect anyone to be doing centuries (100 mile rides) at the end of this but rather enjoy cycling. I first want you to be safe.
Wear protective gear! Cycle on paths if at all possible. If you must be around traffic, pay attention to everything and follow the rules of the road.
A little about me and cycling, from 1992 to 1996 I did not own a vehicle and cycled everywhere. I averaged 10,000 miles a year mostly in San Diego county. I did multiple century rides and one double century. The benefits to my heart from that extreme cycling then, paid off now. My cardiologist gave my heart an A+. Be safe, have fun, watch the pounds melt away.
