So far, my strategy is three fold. 1) plan ahead as much as possible; 2) have lower calorie foods available; & 3) eat lightly during the day, so that I can eat ice cream or cheese nips at night & don't feel deprived.

Calorie Count
Use low calorie sour cream instead of mayo for many things. Buy a good brand though, some brands taste dreadful. Here in the Northeast Hood light is just as good as regular name brand sour cream.
