Ruhu's Journal, 13 April 2014

Well, I'm a traveling girl again. My mom fell a second time (did I tell you that already? -- the last couple of days are a bit of a blur) & is in the hospital. She's bruised & a bit sore, but they're more concerned about what seems to be some type of respiratory issue. It's not pneumonia, but she is on an antibiotic & steroid. The nurse said the dr notes mentioned COPD. I haven't heard her diagnosed with that before, but my father suffered horribly from it and was on oxygen. Both of my parents were smokers until they realized the damage it caused & both survived lung cancer. She sounds congested, but her spirits are good. She's just eager to get home, which doesn't sound like it'll be today.

I couldn't decide what to do, but after they admitted her, I knew I better go to check things out & be with her. As you may already know, I'm her only surviving immediate family -- my father passed almost 20 years ago & my sister, my only sibling, 10 years before that. My mom's only sibling, also a sister, passed years ago too. She does have 2 of my dad's cousins, whom I call aunts, there that she is close to. One's health is not good either, but the other & her daughter have been god-sends.... Like each of you!

I'm doing ok, and know this will be a real test of my new healthy, mindful eating & living skills. Last night at home, I felt sugar cravings return & know it's because I'm still working to build new habits for dealing with stress. The old me stuffed those feelings with food, and especially sugar. The new me is working to find other ways to handle those feelings and/or just feel them. I'll do my best, look for ways to take care of me too, and stay curious through it all. I know & so appreciate that I have your love & support!

I was able to get in a workout this morning, and have been praying along the way grateful to have gods love & support too! But, now I'll take another minute to pray again for serenity. And I remind myself that on this one day, and through each one meal, moment, bite, thought & emotion, I'll pray, breathe, journal, log & express my way. I'm eternally grateful for each of amazing you, my family (especially my Mom) & IRL friends, and having the health & wealth to quickly decide and be able to fly home as a small piece of this life I love! I must have missed the second fall and you are right to go be with her. She's truly blessed to have you as a child and my prayers are with you and your entire family.

Hope everything goes well for you. It can be so stressful. Make sure you take care of you or you won't be able to help her. I was thankful for my daughters being close by and tremendously supportive when my mom's health was not doing well. They were there when I couldn't be due to a crazy DH, finally left him moved in with mom to help her. My siblings were too far away with responsibilities of jobs and families. Though they came when they could.

I hope it's nothing serious xxx. Getting old sucks, you want to be independent, but don't always have the strength and flexibility to deal with stuff. Keep your chin up... And remember that mindful eating - you need to look after yourself, so that you can deal with everything.

So sorry to hear this. Hopefully, if they do get a new diagnosis ironed out, it will lead to appropriate treatment. You have the right focus and are going to be able to be with your mom AND be mindful in your eating. Learning how to handle ourselves in times of stress is definitely an important tool.

Sorry to hear your mom is in the hospital, but hopefully they will get to the bottom of the issue and get her back on her feet in no time. Glad that you were able to get a flight out to see her. Just be mindful and read menues online before going out to eat to choose your meal before you get there and are tempted to order something not on your plan. You will be ok. Prayers to your mother.

Ruth, firstly hugs, this is very stressful for you. Next, be kind to yourself right now. You have a lot on your plate and you are only human. Forgive and move on. Today will be a better day.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. This will def test your willpower but honestly her health is number one priority . Do the best you can and take care of her. If necessary buy a bag of apples or clementines and take the whole bag with you and fill up on them. You will do less damage to yourself than the hospital vending machines.

Hugs for you, oh boy, this is a stressful situation. Good job on getting some exercise in, I think that really helps with stress, which in turns helps make better food choices. Prayers for you & mom!
