Ruhu's Journal, 22 October 2013

Another week, another 1/2 lb... one fasting day at a time. I've gotta love this 5:2 lifestyle! You're probably tired of hearing me sing its praises & I know its certainly not for everyone, but right now for me, it's working, I'm feeling good & enjoying building my healthy eating & living highway in that direction while staying gluten, lactose & sugar aware.

I'm glad I've been right on track for me on this WOE, because I did not have it right about the new book out, Grain Brain. As I mentioned in yesterday's journal, the author, Dr. Perlmutter, was on the Dr. Oz show. While I thought he was saying that wheat & gluten was the cause of or adding to the increasing numbers of Alzheimer's & other neurological disorders, what he actually claims is that it is from all carbs that raise blood sugar. Wow -- that includes fruits & vegetables that grow underground. That's much harder to digest... possibly literally & figuratively!... even knowing he suggests eating the lower blood sugar raising fruits & vegetables in moderation and adding more healthy fats to our diets. More food for thought (again literally & figuratively!)

This morning I'm off to my paddle tennis clinic. The weather is changing in the northeast & temps are dropping, but hopefully not too much before I play! Then up to work after. We have a meeting with OSHA tomorrow, which BIL has been avoiding for a little while now. While he was in rehab, SIL & I tried to get things in order & ready for the meeting, but she said he seems anxious about it, so I'll go the meeting with him. So, today, I have to get him to focus on & finalize our plan! In addition to his addiction issues, he's also probably undiagnosed ADD.

But, before I begin my day, I'll pray --

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

And over this one day, and each one meal, moment, bite & emotion, I'll pray, breathe, journal, log & express my way. I'm grateful today for each of awesome you, my family & IRL friends, and having another day with the health & wealth to live this life I love. xoxox

Good morning Ruth. You are 0.5 lb away from last 120 that you have wanted so badly. Congrats. I am so happy that 5:2 is working for you. I am thinking about it. It might make life easier, having 2 low cal days, then being freer other days. Right now I fast from about 8pm until 1pm each day and then consume about 1200 calories (or less some days) between 1pm and 8pm. I don't record or count calories any more. I eat the same ol, same ol for lunch (a protein bar) and then whatever DH puts in front of me. And I eat that in moderation. I enjoy a coffee and 2 cookies with my MIL after dinner. Sometimes an ounce of cheese as a snack and that's it. Likely too low but the lower I am the better I feel physically/mentally so I am going with it for now. Sorry this post became all about me :) Hope you are enjoying the empty house and not finding yourself lonely. Enjoy the exercise class. Not long now til you go out of town. Bet you can't wait. Have an awesome day Sis :)

Duh - forgot to talk about Dr. Oz show and the book - duh Haven't read it but the big 'in' thing at the moment is blood sugar and diabetes and how controlling blood sugar is where it's at. I don't think you do low carb do you, just gluten and sugar aware? Well, that's like low carb isn't it? I don't eat the sweeter veggies - ie corn, peas, carrots, etc and I seldom do fruit anymore and if I do it's berries - straw, rasp, blue etc. It's just become a way of life and I hope and pray that I'm not doing a number on my body by not consuming fruit, dairy and grains like 'they' all say we should. So far so good, I'm losing, i'm working full time, and still got my sanity. It's so hard to figure out who to trust isn't it?

Is, your IF windows seems to suit you -- don't "they" say (who the heck is "they"anyway?!?) if it ain't broke, don't fix it?!? I do try to limit processed carbs, but while focusing on healthy ones like vegetables & fruits, and don't think I'll change that, but be more aware to go for the lower blood sugar raising ones when I can. You're right, there is too much changing data out there, isn't there? So, keeping our sanity is key! Glad I have you to help me keep mine! xoxox

Morning Angel. NEVER apologize about expressing your happiness. You pray every day for strength and happiness so by all means sing those expressions of joy loudly and proudly. I'm on the fence about fruit sugar - I believe it falls into the every thing in moderation category and definitely should be fewer servings than fresh vegetables but will (hopefully) always be my first choice for dessert over processed sugar items. Have a wonderful day!
